Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Until the stars are all alight
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

What ended up being the trouble?
To: HairOfTheDog
Very funny.
Well, it turned out the gas station was closed, so I met *them* a little past it. They had the same van. ;-)
Stopped on the way home for a few groceries. There was a familiar hobbit there.

Moving is just so fun, isn't it, Rose?
Ack... I'm now at the two-week point.

The system will not boot with the card in and I can only turn the 'puter off by flicking the power switch on the back....well, pulling the cord would work too, it's just that the power switch on the front of the case won't turn it off.
When I plug the card into one PCI slot, the machine powers up (fans and panel lights come on) but the 'puter will not post. When I put the card in while the computer is running, the computer freezes.

"them" huh... bummer. Oh well, we'll keep workin' the problem.
To: Overtaxed
Does the machine POST properly with the card out?
Ethernet cards are cheap ... nobody uses 'em anymore ...

Our current landlord has given us a hard-and-fast date now ... May 9th.
June 9th is more likely ...!

That's only a couple days before me... I know it'll happen but I may go insane first.

And check your connections to the I/O board, where your front power switch is. That should turn the machine off.
Is the front switch a rocker, or a push button?

There's always the yard sale dude...
Heh...it's not really a "problem". I gots lots to do right now.
To: RosieCotton
There's always the yard sale dude... Oh?
I gots lots to do right now.
I know... He'd help you rototill.
To: HairOfTheDog
Just kiddin'. Though I am probably going back. The main guy doing the sale was apparently a network admin type who likes to tinker with old computer stuff in his spare time - most of what he was selling was old printers and servers and various bits and pieces...cards and cases and fans and old network gear.
There was a little Okidata laser printer that would probably be great for what I need - just want to be able to print off mapquest stuff and the occasional form, and I don't care about color. But I used my cash on the mower and he didn't want to take a check, especially an out of state one. So I said maybe I could pick it up after work one day this week if it didn't sell by the end of the day - he wasn't asking much for it and it was in decent shape. Toner cartridges I'd have to order on-line, but they aren't spendy...and I'd likely only need one or so a year, if that.
So...I have his phone number. Make of that what you will. ;-) He's prolly married too, and even if he wasn't...well, it's not as if any and every single guy is gonna be at all interested, even if I were.
Ungh...I do need to rototill soon, don't I? The grass under the first tarp is dead.

To: Rose in RoseBear
Yes, POST's okay without the card.
Heh....I'm on the cutting edge of obsolescence

Front switch is a push button and works okay when the ethernet card's not around.

I wonder if the ethernet card is fried...I'd try a different one and see.
To: HairOfTheDog
Guess not.
Heh...speaking of which, I was working on a computer the other day in an office that had a phone list for current interns at the hospital, with pictures for each one. It was tempting to take notes. ;-)
To: RosieCotton
I don't have another one. Not for the desktop, anyway.

To: Overtaxed
I guessed that. I'm just backing up Rose's advice. ;-) Ethernet cards are dirt cheap these days, especially if you can find a used oen somewhere.
To: RosieCotton; Rose in RoseBear
Well I found a PCI connection that everybody's happy with so I've got obsolete connectivity!

Drat these computers! They're so naughty and so complex.
