The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, technically she mentioned it last night and I avoided the question.

Well, see, there's yer problem right there! You gots a tux and stuff, right? Just go and show those young whippersnappers how dancing is really done!

I say that like I know what I'm talking about. SirKit and I have NEVER been dancing anywhere! He promised me that if x42 were impeached and convicted that he'd take me dancing, but the stupid Senate let him off the hook. I think I'd like to take a ballroom dancing class with him sometime, though. He's actually learned ballroom dancing before. His mom was a dance teacher, so he had to take a class when he was in the 5th grade. He hasn't danced since. ;o)

I think I've seen those. Do you still use lighter fluid and all, or does it eliminate the need for that?

The electric thingie OT posted is intriguing...but I've never seen one and I don't think I have any outlets back there. The chimney starter could be pretty simple...

And the bit of my Mom in me is saying "Charcoal doesn't explode - propane does!" It probably doesn't, but she was terrified of fire for some reason. We didn't really even have a regular grill for the most part, and when I got a portable one I could bring out there, she had us use it about thirty feet from the house.

I've never used one of those chimney starters.

We did chaperone a couple of years ago. I was the only adult to show up in a tux. The headmaster and her husband showed up in jeans which I thought was majorly tacky and an insult to the students.

I wouldn't mind going for the students sake. But I'm not interested in making small talk with the people that have made the Mrs' (and therefore our household's) life miserable for the last four years.

It would be like 2J spending an evening with a roomfull of Dr. Jackasses...

Ever used one of the electric things?

I guess I need to just let go of my fear of lighter fluid. ;-)

Fear of lighter fluid? Sounds like a pretty healthy fear, though there are worse things out there people use instead of lighter fluid that land them in the burn unit pretty quickly.

Ugh.

You ~could~ show up in a grass skirt and coconut bra though. :-)

You can buy those starter charcoal briquettes that light with just a match. You don't have to fool with the lighter fluid. Just get some of those and regular charcoal and use them to start the fire.

As I said, Mom was terrified of fire and convinced that most things would burn or blow up in a jiffy, given half a chance. How she managed to survive heating with wood for twenty some years, I don't know. She did keep the fire pretty small (which ironically meant more creosote accumulation in the chimney, making chimney fires more likely...)

yes, I've used the electric thing. They work okay.

The problem with the lighter fluid is getting the amount right...too much and WHOOSH! Too little, and you don't get a fire.

I've used those a few times. They do tend to taste funny if you don't get 'em going right.

But I don't think we mixed 'em with regular charcoal - maybe that was the trouble.

I haven't used those starter briquettes. I've used the "easy light" charcoal that leaves a funny taste, though.

Experimentation could be fun, though. So there's that...

Yeah...that's what I used. If those aren't the same as the starter...I guess I've never used the starter ones.

Maybe I'm confuzed on what we used at the beach. Didn't notice a funny taste.

'Course the cook was prolly highly lubricated (and possible flammable) at the time...
