The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm taking the laptop with me when I go up next month, so I can try it there.

Shameless.

Nicely done. But shameless.

Good plan. That's the house-hunting trip?

Another three weeks of waiting here. Oh well! That's so much better than eight.

Yup. We've already seen a few online that look very promising, but they may not be available on our timetable.

25 more days here....

Good morning everyone.... With Pippin home (I thought he was dead) I have a much more positive outlook and much less sensitivity to all the negativity I was in yesterday.

We still hear them coyotes, but they haven't got my kittens, yet.

I got to browsing around last night, trying to find coyote sounds and what they mean.... found this (Group Howl) - and that's definately it... a few different voices and singing that kind of sound... I wonder, when they do that, have they found something? or are they just partying? When we hear it, they're close. And they stop the INSTANT we turn on the spotlight.

Heh... I just played it again now and the cats all scattered and the dogs started barking.

Anyway, pinging FReeper Varmint Al because the page I found these on, doing a search for "coyote sounds" has got to be your page... Varmint Al's Hunting Page

Would it do any good to leave the spotlight on or get a motion sensor light? That wouldn't stop your critters from goin' towards them, but would it keep them from the house?

Or you could get a coyote trap. But you have to put those as far away from your house as possible...no wait, that's a Japanese Beetle trap.

Sorry. I got confused. ;-)

Problem is you have to bait coyote traps with cats and she's only got three of those.

I'm guessing she's not in the mood to think that's funny...

Probably not.

She could borrow one of Rosie's cats.

Now they'll both hate me.

Glad the kitties are all safe and sound. :-)

We need to have a little "party" of our own with those coyotes.

I think if it was on all the time or was automatic, they'd learn to ignore it. They stop and scatter because it's us, and we often yell too. You remember all the issues I had with shooting them. They're still issues... and at this point, we haven't seen them when they party like that... not even eyes. Too much brush and undergrowth.

I talked to the trapper on the phone after the other sightings when they were getting bold. He said he could come out and set traps, but that coyotes can be crafty and hard to trap and it might take a while. Honestly, I still feel that we'll never eliminate them, I just want to keep a good fence between them and the dogs, a good sense of fear in them about letting themselves be seen, and the kittens will either have to learn to stay in the compound or stay within a short sprint of a tree. That's just the way it is.

It must be the day for finding lost cats.

My supervisor's missing kitty was found yesterday in good health.

Well, good! I'm glad you're feeling upbeat...I'm feeling better than I have in the last couple of days!

Got a phone call from Steve.

This morning, I emailed the properly formated paper to the UPS Store. They printed it up for Steve and he picked it up on the way to the Tulsa campus. He had to get it signed by the advisor before he could turn it in to the Graduate College in Stillwater. It was a gamble to even *catch* the guy on campus today and lo and behold, they met up in the parking lot! (I asked Steve "Did you tatoo 'im?" A PWH reference.)

Dr. JBY made some grumpy statements, but also said that it appeared like Steve had indeed addressed the issues he'd marked for revision. He was also pleased with the appearance of the re-format. He signed the re-format check draft and Steve called me to update, then got on the bus for Stillwater. He made appointments to meet with the other two committee members while he is there.

So today, Steve will turn in to the graduate college the signed draft for format check, the paper that shows he's signed off on the defense and he'll meet with the two committee members based in Stillwater.

Then tonight, it's back to the grindstone, dealing with any further revisions. PRAY it's not too intense!

That makes sense. I don't have too worry about dangerous critters too much. Every now and then we'll get a raccoon or a deer in the yard.

Mostly its tree-rats and voles/moles that cause me grief. And the occasional mouse.

Interesting howling going on there. Thegirls piped up (they looked like meerkats) and looked at me as if to say, "What in the world is THAT?" Ben was lounging on the cool bathroom floor, and as soon as he heard it he ran for cover under the bed. Ben's an Old Salt when it comes to being outdoors. I trust his instinct.

Run Away, run away!

(speaking of... I need to watch Holy Grail again...)

Okay, time to get ready for the photographer. Laters.

The thing is, 2J, the way Steve is being treated is as if he had not yet done his defense.

Lordy, remind me to take the non-thesis option if I ever decide to finish my masters (which is mostly a moot point now, I have only done half the required hours at Tarleton in Stephenville)!
