Show me some stats re: the lax teams vs. the student population as a whole with regard to "boorishness," and that might matter some tiny bit. The "boorishness" I've read about includes such capital offenses as public urination and disorderly conduct.
The fact is that every university has an uncomfortable relationship between the oh-so-enlightened faculty (and their indoctrinees) and the jocks. The fact that these kids were part of a easily identified group doesn't mean their behavior is any more "boorish" than that of the general student population.
I'd put up the arrest charged of any dorm floor or fraternity at any major university against the charges of these guys. I'll bet they don't differ in the least, and the dorm floor would probably be worse.
