Expectant mom dies in collision
A 27-year-old expectant mother died in a head-on collision Sunday on U.S. 31 in Shelby County, authorities said.
Sarah Porter, 27, of Jemison died in the 11:20 a.m. accident, said Sgt. Tim Sartain, Alabama State Troopers spokesman. She was six months pregnant, said Doug Ballard Jr., Shelby County coroner.
Her husband, 29-year-old Heath Porter, remained in critical condition at UAB Hospital Sunday night, said Bob Shepherd, hospital spokesman.
Marco Guarviola, 26, address unknown, a passenger in the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck that collided with the Porters' 2002 Volkswagen, was also taken to UAB Hospital, where he was listed as critical Sunday night, Shepherd said.
Manuel Valdez, 22, address unknown, who was also in the truck, was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Efforts to reach a hospital spokesman Sunday night were unsuccessful.
The accident, which occurred in the Saginaw community just south of Alabaster, is under investigation, Sartain said. He declined to provide details.
Several serious accidents have occurred at the site, Sartain said.
"I don't understand why so many accidents have occurred at this particular location," Sartain said. "Traffic is moderately heavy, but the street is a straight, two-lane stretch."
Accident fatalities are always sad, Sartain said.
"But this happening on Easter Sunday is such a tragedy," he said.

I'm just stunned that so few FReepers take issue with these thinly veiled excuses to attack Mexicans.
If I hadn't posted to this thread, chances are it would be chock-full of "a Mexican did ~this~ to my family" stories and end up being a love-in for the "Kill "em All" crowd.
I'm tired of seeing the anti-Mexican crowd running around FR hiding behind the illegal immigration debate.
I remember these same types of folks from the Elian days who used that poor kid as an excuse to vent their animosity towards Cubans.
I am a she and to my knowledge, I have no co-horts, unlike some of you on this thread who have pinged others to come here simply to lie and call people racists.
You make FR look bad with this kind of behavior.
"I don't understand why so many accidents have occurred at this particular location," Sartain said. "Traffic is moderately heavy, but the street is a straight, two-lane stretch."
Answer is obvious. Road signs were not printed in Spanish which should be required on all roads in the United States.
I think all prior accidents on this road should be reviewed and if latinos were involved in other accidents on this road a case for discrimination can be made and compensation be paid accordingly to hispanics involved. Legality has nothing to do with it but discrimination against hispanic speaking people is obviously involved.
I think taxes should be immediately increased to cover the cost of reprinting all road signage throughout the country in spanish
You are right, of course, but my point is that when people are real angry (for good reasons) they don't tend to be very concerned about minor injustices. Count me among such angry people.
The best way you can fight anti-Hispanic prejudice is to fight illegal immigration rather than by going off on the odd bit of unjust racial stereotyping.
It should not be hard since he was arrested.
Illegals need to leave, period.
I have some Christian friends, a married couple, who were at one time refugees from Sudan. They are having a dickens of a time getting her Mom here out of in Africa. They provide for her "long distance" but she is all the family they have left in Africa. He does not even know what ever happened to his parents!!
These folks have a company cleaning offices and churches and can provide for her. In fact, she could help them with child care as they run their cleaning business.
They have to do this legally and it is just fair to them as they are now citizens of the USA and TAXPAYERS, HARD WORKERS and good folks!!
And playing the patriotic American card does not show you in a good light. You are implying that others who are trying to work out solutions regarding immigration... or even those who simply want to discuss it, are not good Americans.
In the end... sometimes there is nothing left to do but to point and laugh. At first this meatsack started to make me angry, now I'm just kinda amused and must sit in slack-jawed wonder.
:-)
This is about the 8th time I have posted this FACT, but one of the main points I wanted to make in posting this story is how the LIBERAL NEWS MEDIA will leave out the details to put a positive spin on any story about illegals.
The status of the illegals who hit Mrs. Porter WAS reported on TV and radio news.
My issue is that the anti-Hispanic crowd is hiding within the anti-illegal immigration crowd.
We need to do something about illegal immigration - absolutely.
But I'll be damned if I'm going to be associated with the likes of some folks who are on that side of the debate solely to vent their hatred towards Hispanics.
>>>Ok. Lighten up, Francis. Some of us actually work.>>>
Who is Francis and what does the work have to do with anything. I didn't say every immigrant DOESN'T pay, I said would be REQUIRED to pay.
I have seen no one here post any kind of "kill-em'all" attitude. Are you suggesting that Freepers here are actually like that? We should report that Post haste.
I personally love Cubans, because they love freedom. I spent many nights in prayer for Elian.
Please stop lumping people into stereotyped categories just because we do not favor illegal immigration.
I am totally against illegals....ALL OF THEM FROM WHERE EVER THEY COME!!
It is just that some freepers want all pertinent info on every thread. It is a good idea to back it all up.
Check the web site of the radio or TV that you heard it on and maybe it is there.
Regards, Lion.
"Why would your rates go up if you are not at fault?
ALL of our rates go up when an insurance company pays out for a not-at-fault accident. The money has to come from somewhere, and it's passed back to the consumer. That is why in Texas, my auto insurance is twice what is was in Ohio: there are a bunch of uninsured illegals driving around, and the companies know it. It's the same reason ALL of our healthcare expenses are higher than they should be, b/c the hospitals know that a certain percentage of non-paying customers will be treated.

Yet another reason not to move to Texas. Thanks for the explanation.
You shouldn't have to find the info ~after~ you post the headline though, Lion.
You have cohorts, even if you don't know it.
You make FR look bad with this kind of behavior.
No, it is the racists that want to turn EVERYTHING into an "illegal alien" issue that make FR look bad.
Please stop lumping people into stereotyped categories...
Dang... which are we supposed to do?
When someone claims I am a racist and that I hate Mexicans, it's time to stand up and say that that kind of behavior makes FreeRepublic look very bad.
Those comments were untrue, and uncalled for.
Your concern should be towards those who lie at will about Freepers they do not know.
