BRITAIN'S Queen Elizabeth is the most popular member of the royal family and more than half her subjects want her to reign for the rest of her life, a poll ahead of her 80th birthday suggested today.
Some 26 per cent of respondents plumped for the monarch - who turns 80 on Saturday - as their favourite royal compared to just one per cent for Camilla, the second wife of Prince Charles, the Queen's eldest son and heir apparent.
Prince William, 23, second in line to the throne and Charles' elder son, was second with 21 per cent followed by the Queen's only daughter, Princess Anne, on 11 per cent, the poll of 1,500 people for ITV News television found.
Charles and his younger son Prince Harry, 21, polled four per cent each.
The survey showed strong support for the Queen to stay on the throne until she dies (57 per cent) while 16 per cent thought she should step aside to make way for William.
Only 12 per cent wanted the Queen to abdicate in favour of Charles.
It also found increased support for the idea of a monarchy: more than two-thirds (68 per cent) still supported the concept while 13 per cent were opposed to having a successor and want the country to become a republic.
When pollsters MORI asked the same question last year, 22 per cent of the British public favoured abolishing the monarchy; 65 per cent were in favour of it.
More than half (57 per cent) felt Camilla should definitely not become queen when Charles becomes king while 29 per cent believed she should.
She's only #1 because Diana is dead.....
Plus, who is her competition: Charles and Cavallo?
Diana who?
Hey AD do you want PRince Charley or Prince William to be your head of the state if something happen to Queen Betty
But Diana was a psycho...
Popular compared to whom?
As it stastes in the article, "Queen Elizabeth is the most popular member of the Royal Family".
For those of us in Australia, Canada, the UK, and a good portion of the world, this is not a matter of "General/Chat", but of "Government", "News", and "Current Affairs".
Queen Liz is a trooper. What a great job she has done all these years. Her kids didn't turn out so well, but the grandkids and nieces and nephews seem to be okay.
Not wishing to be difficult, but does that mean any non-US news is in the same category?
Indeed she was. But crazy people have always been most fascinating and endearing.
