Arabic Mass? On Easter? WTF? (Vanity)
None | PhilosopherStone

So I had just finished dropping my daughter off at Psychotic-Ex-Wifes house and decided to stop off at my favorite watering hole.

One of my favorite bartendresses was there looking very glum:

Me: Why so glum? Her: It's Easter and I'm working. Plus, this morning I went to Mass and it was in Arabic. Me: You mean Aramaic? Her: No, in Arabic. I said a prayer and left. I couldn't deal with it.

WTF?

OK, this is San Francisco (St Thomas More Church for those who know about it...), but if there is ONE day of the year where the Mass should be in English or Latin, it's today.

Sorry, but if the Catholic church is not ready to defend itself from Islam, I don't know why the rest of us should be.

The only problem is that this is San Francisco.

NOTHING that happens here is without political importance. And when a Catholic Church offers two masses, one in English, one in Arabic (which they NEVER offer) on Easter, I sense something wrong.

St. Thomas More in San Francisco offers Sunday Mass in a number of different vernaculars to serve its ethnically diverse parishoners. Their pastor, Father Labib Kobti, is originally from Lebanon.

Sounds like the bartendress is either a Christmas/Easter Catholic or that isn't her parish.

Sunday
Saturday, 5:00 p.m. (Sunday Vigil)
Sunday, 8:00 a.m. Portuguese/Brazilian
Sunday, 10:00 a.m. English
Sunday, 11:45 a.m. Arabic & English
Sunday, 8:00 p.m. English

Uhm... On Easter? In a church that never offers Arabic masses?

More a political statement, me thinks...

Most Arab-Americans are Christians, many of minority Rites within the Catholic Church. A goodly number of these folks have been chased out of their ancient homelands by the followers of Mohammed. Most are conservative.

Mass should only be in Latin as it once was just for the universiality and then your friend would not have had this problem. That said, no matter the language, the Mass was valid (even in San Francisco).

No, she was stuck here working.

There are roughly 5 Arab speakers in the 50 square mile area surrounding the church.

Psssst. There are Arabs that speak Arabic, who are practicing Christians. Dirty little secret, pal!

Agreed. Having lived in the area for years, I can tell you that the number of Arabic speakers here is negligable.

The previous poster didn't post the Easter Mass schedule.

As I said, since the Church is just off campus from one of the most Liberal universities in America, I have my doubts about the real reasons...

Do you not want Christian churches to reach out to Muslims? I don't understand your point.

Uhm... On one of the two days of the year that are most Holy to Catholics? No...

Especially when it is obviously a political statement.

With the exception of there being no 11:45 Mass, the schedule for Easter looks the same as any other Sunday.

Easter Triduum 2006 Holy Thursday, 7:30 p.m. - Mass of the Lord's Supper (all communities)
Good Friday, 12:00 Noon - Way of the Cross, 1:00 - Liturgy of the Lord's Passion (English), 9:00 p.m. - Liturgy of the Lord's Passion (Arabic)
Holy Saturday, 7:00 p.m. - Easter Vigil (English), 10:00 p.m. - Easter Vigil (Arabic)
Easter Sunday Mass of the Resurrection - 8:00 a.m. (Portuguese-Brazilian), 10:00 a.m. Mass (for all people followed by children's Easter egg hunt at the Peace Statue on Brotherhood Way; note that parents must accompany children); NO 11:45 a.m. Mass; 8:00 p.m. (English)

C) The sermon is done every Sunday in Arabic.

The entire Mass is said in Arabic not just the homily.

You're hanging out in a bar on Easter yet you're fretting over what language the Mass is being said in?
