MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Two bodies were recovered Friday night from a park lagoon in the area where two Milwaukee boys have been missing for almost month, police said.

"It's very difficult at this early time to make any indication of who the child might be," Police Chief Nan Hegerty told reporters as she announced the discovery of the first body. "It looks like it has been in the lagoon for quite some time."

She said an autopsy would be done Saturday.

Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz confirmed that divers later recovered a second body from the lagoon.

Hegerty said the park and pond had been searched a number of times in the hunt for Purvis Virginia Parker, 11, and Quadrevion Henning, 12.

They were last seen the afternoon of March 19 when they asked Henning's grandfather if they could play basketball at a nearby park.

In the ensuing days, police and volunteers searched the neighborhood, leafletted the city and made repeated appeals for information anyone might have on what happened to the youngsters.

Police fielded hundreds of calls on a tip line offering possible leads.

The boys' families said the two had no history of running way and had good school attendance records.

Hegerty said the body floating in the pond was reported at 7:23 p.m. Friday by two people walking in the park, and it appeared to be that of a child.

She said the body was clothed, somewhat decomposed and appeared to be not that of a young child but not that of an adult.

Questioned by reporters, she said there was no type of container around the body, and the body was not bound.

Divers would be searching the lagoon later Friday night, she said.

I'm thinking one fell in, the other went in to rescue him and that's all she wrote.

We've been asked by the local police to keep a sharp eye when we're on one of our local lakes this spring/summer. We had two men drown together there last year. They've recovered one, but the other man is still missing.

It's just so tragic for the family. Prayers up. I'm sure we'll know later today, for sure, that it's these two missing boys. :(

There was a news conference today. Both mothers have identified their "babies." What a shame. The loss of a child has got to be the worst thing to go through.

Again, Prayers Up.

I cannot imagine losing my child. Beyond contemplation.

I know. I raised three boys, and I'm so very grateful they made it to adulthood...because they sure did try to maim and injure one another in very creative ways over the years, LOL!

RIP, Little Angels. There must've been a reason you were needed elsewhere right now.
