308 vs 30.06 - Vanity

Posted on 04/14/2006 1:13:37 PM PDT by bill1952

Hi.

I'm just getting back into hunting and target shooting, initially to 1,000 yards. Game would be whitetail deer.

Target shoots would be for both single shot accuracy and for grouping multiple shots. I'm looking for information on the .308 vs the 30.06 And any other suggestions would be fine.

I grew up with the 30.06, (gamemaster & Springfield bolt) but several people are telling me its time to look at the .308 particularly since it may become harder to find 30.06 if times in this country become tough, and 308 ammo is everywhere.

What are your ideas on long range target calibers?

I don't want an esoteric sniper rifle that won't last to practice with without burning out the barrel, but a good flat long range rifle/caliber/load(s) that I can practice with, and would be practical for hunting as well.

I'm not looking at mouse killers at this time. Thats another thread 8^)

I absolutely agree with this statement, but who can have just one?

I currently only have one, but it's a prewar Model 70 carbine. :)

"I currently only have one"

Beware the man with only one rifle.

"but it's a prewar Model 70 carbine"

Especially one of those.

I would go with the 30-36. In my opinion it is the best rifle round ever. It is sutible for all meduim to large sized game in the USA. Check out the Rmington and Savage line of Bolt-action Rifles in 30-36.

Hmmm, interesting...Ive got both. Both are Remington model 700 BDL, the .30-06 is a left hand action(was willed to me by my late father) the other is a RH action .308(same deal)they are both 7.62, but the ought 6, is a 72mm cartridge as opposed to the 52mm or 54...cant remember. length cartridge of the .308 but yes, the bore is the same, the chamber is quite different. As far as accuracy, depends ont he size of nail...the .308 is a tack driver, the ought 6 is a 16 penny nail driver...big nails are good. My next one is gonna be a 300 rem ultramag. Bigger nails are better!
