IBM will unveil a technology on Monday that aims to bring a new level of security to devices such as PDAs and mobile phones that were previously considered vulnerable to attacks.

"SecureBlue", as the technology is called, will enable encryption of data to protect it on the core processors, or central chips, that power such devices. IBM's initiative might put pressure on processor makers Intel and AMD to step up security on their chips.

DVD encryption scheme CSS was based on a hardware key, but the problem with hardware keys is that as soon as they are compromised, you've unlocked everything.

I'd rather have a software solution that can be changed if the original key is compromised.

From what I've heard the encryption scheme to be implemented by the "Secure Blue" chip is supposed to be based on a sophisticated algorithm called "Triple-ROT52", developed at an university in Australia. Neat stuff, indeed!

Now let's lean back and see how long it takes for the Inquirer to pick this up...

Google hasn't yet heard of ............Triple-ROT52.............
