When I was young, I tried to knock the cover off the ball, and one day I played with an old guy who could barely hit 200 yards but every shot was right down the middle. He cleaned my clock! That was when I figured it out!
I think all long-term golfers figure that out, eventually. If you're going to play with pleasure into old age, you have to adjust your game to your developing abilities, as it were.
Had to laugh at your post. My 88-year old Dad plays like that. Can't hit it as far as he used to, but every drive is true. Puts all the younger golfers to shame.
Weather permitting, he is out there everyday. His ultimate shame is that he now has to use a cart. Really hurts his ego. But I believe that golf has prolonged his life. It makes him wake up eager to get to the course everyday.
