Liza Minnelli says Cher would win contest to determine No. 1 gay icon (over herself & Streisand)

In a contest among Liza Minnelli, Cher and Barbra Streisand to determine who's the No. 1 gay icon, Cher would win - or so Minnelli says.

"I think probably Barbra and maybe even Cher and myself in school felt like outcasts because we didn't have standard looks," Minnelli told Newsweek for its issue on newsstands Monday.

"Maybe what a gay icon is, is a person who is rooted for - in other words, cheered on - by people who feel different," the 60-year-old Minnelli said as her 1972 concert Liza With a Z aired on Showtime and comes out this week on DVD.

But being a gay icon doesn't necessarily mean "gaydar" comes with the turf. She says she didn't find out until two weeks after she married her first husband, Peter Allen, that he was gay.

"Honey, I was 17 when I met him," Minnelli told Newsweek. "But I was the last one to see him before he died because we stayed friends, and that was tough."

She may be a legend, but Minnelli said she mingles with all the classes.

"One of my best friends is a taxi driver; another is a maintenance man," she said. "I go everywhere. People are wonderful. They say hi and I say hi, and we keep going. That's New York."

I've always observed that homosexuals seem to have a totally false idea of what women are really like. I think it is part of the disorder.

Just watch a bunch of them act like "girls". They are so far off from a normal woman you know they are living in fantasyland.

I consider women like Cher and Liza abnormal. The fit the "gay" mold. They fill the gay fantasy.

Maybe its because female impersonators have an easier time becoming their lookalikes.

That is my favorite photo of all time.

I actually have a copy of it hanging in my cubicle at work. Whenever I need a snicker, it is always there for me.

You know, thirty five years ago I had a thing for Liza.

I mean, I thought about her "in that way."

Ditto. I was 11 when Life magazine featured her in her little "Cabaret" outfit on the cover.

She made me feel all tingly.

Those comments are not mine.

Hey! There's no need to insult the Addams' family that way! The Addams' family was Ozzie and Harriet compared to these freakazoids.

BTW, isn't the picture on this post with the Four Freaks of the Apolcalypse a great advertisement for taking Hollywood political opinions seriously? (NOT)

- A New York judge on Monday dismissed a $10 million spousal abuse suit against Liza Minnelli filed by her estranged husband David Gest, who claimed the entertainer assaulted him in a drunken rage.

"The plaintiff complaint must be dismissed in its entirety. There is no triable issue of fact," said Judge Jane Solomon of state Supreme Court in Manhattan, adding there was conflicting evidence about the extent of Gest's injuries.

Gest alleged in his 11-page lawsuit that Minnelli, 60, threw a lamp at him at a London hotel, and that when he tried to calm her down she beat him in the face with her fists.

Gest sued for $10 million, saying in the suit that Minnelli's assault caused him "throbbing pain, severe headaches, vertigo, nausea, hypertension, scalp tenderness and insomnia."
