The below is a quote from Dana Rohrbacher,
"I say let the prisoners pick the fruits," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of California,"
Dane, I'm going to explain this to you just once.
The jobs you describe - janitor, vegetable picker, etc. - are called entry-level positions. This means that people do them as teenagers or young adults while they are aquiring the skills needed for the career of their choice.
As a young man, I bucked hay, washed dishes, changed irrigation pipe and other menial tasks. I learned the value of a dollar, and that hard work and skill lead to more dollars. These lessons served me will in my 13 years in the military, and the concepts of honor, teamwork and accountability that I learned there continue to serve me well in my current career.
Now, I am sick and tired of reading you speak of entry level jobs as if there is nothing in this world that could possibly be worse. You are apparently the only one elitist enough to turn your nose up to it. Fine.
The question is not whether or not Americans "want" to do these jobs. Of course we don't. But, they're jobs Americans MUST do because not everyone gets to start their career in middle management. A college education does not guarantee future employment, and I can tell you for a fact that employers still value relevant experience over formal education.
Kevin Turner started working for Wal-Mart as a stock boy and ended up as CIO. There are countless uniquely American stories like this. I'd like for there to be countless more.
Hello, Dane? You forgot to answer me.
How much does the job pay?
Why should a farmer be in business if he can't find a way to do it legally?
LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!
There was a time when teenagers worked making snowcones, mowed our lawns, did odd jobs etc. I'm telling you I DON'T KNOW HOW WE MANAGED ALL OF THESE YEARS WITHOUT MEXICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That farmer isn't honest if he's employing illegals. Anybody who hires illegals has been picking my pocket for years to subsidize their employees. At this point, I hope they lose them all 'cause I've had it up to my eyeballs and I don't give a sh!t what happens to them.
If they aren't smart enough to figure out how to run a business legally then they should be out of business and out of my pocket. They can do the entry level jobs if need be. Sounds like that's where they belong.
Though this question is not directed at me, (thank God, considering the strangely "stalker" slant of it) I'll take a shot at aswering it.
You can tell him not to write out prescriptions for controlled substances when not medically warranted. You can tell him not to defraud Medicare. You can tell him he must pay taxes on his income. You can tell him to do anything you want that is required by law, or tell him not to do anything that is against the law.
Forcing someone to obey the law is not the same as telling them how to run their business.
And no, I am not going to apply for a job picking vegetables tomorrow. I've worked my way up the food-chain to a point where I don't have to. My 16 year old son might, if it paid as much (relative to inflation) as I made, when I was his age, cleaning 7-11 stores.
Sounds good to me. It'll free up more prime California land for development, reduce demand on scare water supplies, less water pollution from agricultural runoff, etc.
A lot of the fruit we get in the winter actually comes from South America already, BTW. I don't see the harm in importing more from elsewhere during the rest of the year (can't be SA, though, since our summer is their winter).
Yes, I'd rather pay a farm worker to harvest in South America than in this country.
That way, I don't have to pay his emergency room bills when he gets sick, pay for his kids' education, pay for his kids' medicate, or pay for any of the countless other government services illegal aliens use.
It sure is.
I am a brand new admirer of STEVE KING, US CONGRESSMAN, (R) IOWA.
Farm workers in my area of California make $8 to $9 an hour. My understanding is about half are legal, half are illegal. A lot of the Mexican Mestizos have left harvesting for better paying construction jobs. Now the farmers are importing Mexican Indians, who not only don't speak English, they don't speak Spanish either!
But we don't need them, modern technology and robotics could mechanize the harvesting of lettuce, brocoli, strawberries, etc. But who would risk investing in machines like this when the next wave of illegals might come in and do the job for $6 an hour?
Low cost (some might say slave) labor like this inhibits technological development.
There are machines being developed to pick fruit/vegatables.
Janitorial jobs are great paying if you're the owner.
You forgot the "Barf Alert" on the title.
That is about what a young man earns around here (San Antonio area) starting out at in a construction job with no experience.
There are no jobs that Americans won't do.
Why don't the pro-illegal lobby ever talk about the construction jobs? Becuase they know those were high paying jobs for those with no skills or education. They don't like to think about those jobs being taken by illegals.
Oh, and automation would dry up a lot of the agri jobs.
I have no idea how we lived in upstate NY without illegals to mow our lawns, shovel our snow, or paint our houses. I guess I just didn't realize how good the smug feeling must be to have serfs.
