How much does the job pay?
Farm workers in my area of California make $8 to $9 an hour. My understanding is about half are legal, half are illegal. A lot of the Mexican Mestizos have left harvesting for better paying construction jobs. Now the farmers are importing Mexican Indians, who not only don't speak English, they don't speak Spanish either!
But we don't need them, modern technology and robotics could mechanize the harvesting of lettuce, brocoli, strawberries, etc. But who would risk investing in machines like this when the next wave of illegals might come in and do the job for $6 an hour?
Low cost (some might say slave) labor like this inhibits technological development.
