In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
esculent \ESS-kyuh-lunt\ adjective
: edible
Example sentence:
Sonia is a chef at The Wild Asparagus, a top-notch restaurant whose claim to fame is that every dish on the menu features an esculent native plant.
Etymology:
One appealing thing about "esculent" is that this word, which comes from the Latin for food ("esca"), has been around for 375 years. If we give you just one more tidbit of etymologythat "esca" is from Latin "edere," which means "to eat"can you pick which of the following words is NOT related to "esculent"?
comestible edacious edible escalade escarole obese
"Comestible" (meaning "edible"), "edacious" (meaning "voracious"), "edible," "escarole" (a type of salad green), and "obese" are all descendants of "edere." Only "escalade" (meaning "an act of scaling walls") doesn't belong on the list. It descends from the Italian "scalare," meaning "to scale." Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The sun is shining and it's nearly 60 already..........but the fog was pea soup thick at 6 this morning, which is when they make the call on delaying.

A UN Select committee will now look into allegations that Irans nuclear program is engaged in building The Bomb and not merely producing energy. Apparently, the divine Muslim meals enjoyed by the Ayatollahs and their lackeys cannot be rendered esculent without employing at least 50 megatons (about 50 trillion BTUs, give or take) of heat for their microwave ovens. Who elects UN bureaucrats to do this serious work is beyond me. Do these people understand the gravity of the situation, or do they need to have a clue sent to them before they realize that their failure can lead directly to Armageddon? It appears as if Ahm-in-a-Jihad will choose a peaceful solution just after we see the sun elect to rise in the west. Once again, at the last moment, a feckless world and an impotent UN will set Uncle Sam on the problem, and complain all the while as our brave fighting forces solve it.
