Mafia boss's niece shot for having an illegitimate baby

THE nephew of a Calabrian mafia boss shot his sister for "dishonouring" the family by having a baby out of wedlock, Italian police said yesterday.

Bruna Morabito, 32, lay near-dead in a Sicilian hospital last night after her younger brother shot her four times in the face, 12 days after she gave birth.

Giovanni "Ringo" Morabito, 24, turned himself in to police in his hometown of Reggio Calabria, thinking he had killed her.

"I killed my sister because she muddied the honour of our family," he told police, La Repubblica newspaper reported.

"She was separated from her husband and had a baby with another man."

He had waited until after the birth of his sister's baby -- his nephew -- because "you never kill a pregnant woman".

you never kill a pregnant woman

I guess they're pro-life... at least until you've grown up.

A murdering thug worried about his family honor. Bizarre to say the least.

Sicily and Corsica (and many other places in the Mediterranean) were Moslem for centuries.

After they were re-Christianized, the traditionalists "went underground". That's the origins of your Mob.

They don't even know why they do this stuff anymore.

One of my old secretaries grew up in a Mob controlled neighborhood in Brooklyn. She dated a cappo. Finally, she broke up with him (when several of her cousins and uncles went to prison) and decided to cut other ties to the Mob.

Then she married a Jewish guy. She went to work for us while she was still in hiding and figured that a building full of cops was a good place for someone in her position to work.

Finally, she had a baby. The day the baby was born, a formal family peace was declared and she was able to get on with her life and not have to hide from her relatives.

In Italia or Sicilia I'm guessing that a marriage to a Jewish guy would have been considered illegitimate, but in America, once the baby arrived, it was OK.

This relative modernity on the part of the American Mob is probably result of the pioneering work done in Jewish/Mob relations by such luminaries as Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano.

This guy just sounds like a nut. Can anyone picture Sonny Corleone doing something like that? He might have whipped his sister's boyfriend but he wouldn't have killed her.

I once had an Italian professor tell me that the word MAFIA is an acronym for Morte à Francia, Italia Anela (Death to the French, Italians sigh)

Well, say what you will but, the guy does have his standards, ethics, morals, oh never mind.

I wonder if this is how the Sopranos will end?

The Sopranos will probably end the way the old mafioso down the street ended ~ burned in a trailer fire.

Stuff happens with these guys all the time.

Yeah, generations of criminal activity and mob violence left the family honour intact but a baby born without a marriage, shoot the b!tch. Nice, I'll bet has says his prayers too.

Do you have a source for that? Wikipedia says it grew up in the 1800s.

Don't even bother, mob started because the gov't in Rome could care less about Sicily so it was the old west. The mob moved in because of the lawlessness. They're not descendants of Muslims.

Actually, that post is so stupid, I don't believe I actually responded to it.

The Mob, no doubt, came into existence simultaneously with modern times ~ on the other hand, the Corsican Union (Union Corse) (the predecessor of the Mob) was in business in New Orleans way back when it was still part of Spain ~ and that's a long time ago.

Bandits in Sicily are nothing new, and neither are honor killings.

The problem here is the Wikipedia "source" is not fully informed.

I wonder what the birth rate of "illegitimate children" is in Sicily? Not much I would expect.

You can find Greek temples there too. Here's an excellent page on Sicilians...has a photo of the temple at Segesta. (5th c. BC)

There's more than one "population" in Sicily. Back in the hills illegitimacy is an issue, but so is the ability of a woman to give birth. Down in the cities, they're more like modern Europeans.

Good article too ~ unfortunately the writer skipped over the Angevinians and their brief rule. Maybe because the Sicilians killed them all!
