It just seems that mixing Bocelli and the AI contestants is like trying to mix oil and water.

Oh I know :) Inviting Bocelli probably has more to do with ratings than with helping the contestants.

There are a couple of Bocelli fans here on FR that have told me they don't like Idol, but they might tune in for the first time next week and get hooked.

CLASSIC LOVE SONGS... MY SONG CHOICES FOR THE CONTESTANTS ( Note, I am trying to choose WELL KNOWN SONGS FROM THE PAST that have been known to be classics ( i.e., undying). Otherwise I don't know how Andrea Bocelli can even thinkof coaching these kids ).

Taylor .. anyone of these :

1) WITHOUT YOU ( Harry Nilson ) -- The chorus -- "Can't Live if Living is without you" is your style.

2) Smoke Gets In Your Eyes --- Can you sustain the ending for at least 8 seconds ?

3) I Can't Stop Loving You -- Ray Charles ( who else )

4) You've Lost That Loving Feeling - Righteous Brothers

5) We’re All Alone - Boz Skaggs

6) ME AND MRS. JONES (Billy Paul )

7) MY LOVE ( Paul McCartney )

Chris

1) CRYING ( Roy Orbison) If you want to scream/yell, now's your chance. But the falsetto near the end will challenge you. This is an outstandingly haunting song but is a challenge to sing.

Yes, it’s true that no male singer has ever tried this because it is hard. It requires a transition to falsetto and the ending will tax your range and ability to sustain the high note for at least 6 seconds without cracking.

I’d like to see Taylor *OR* Chris try it. If you can do justice to it, it will be a super WOW moment and you have the crown in the bag.

2) Have I Told You Lately (That I Love You ) -- ROD STEWART

3) LAYLA -- Eric Clapton

4) ALWAYS -- Bon Jovi

It's hard to pick a song that Andrea Bocelli can coach for Chris Daughtry. The two of them go together like Oil and Water. It's also hard to find a hard edged love song because there's practically none out there.

Rock is about not conforming and that makes this genre a problem for Chris (again). So he's got to compromise and I don't know if his diehard fans can take it.

Paris (I'm trying to find one that fits her age)

1) THE MAN I LOVE -- Billie Holiday

2) HOW HIGH THE MOON -- Ella Fitzerald

3) ONE LESS BELL TO ANSWER -- Fifth Dimension

4) NEITHER ONE OF US ( WANTS TO BE THE FIRST TO SAY GOODBYE) -- Gladys Knight

5) THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE -- Roberta Flack

Kellie Pickler ( again, How is Bocelli going to coach her ?)

I'll Just choose love songs that are REAL CLASSIC hoping Bocelli had heard of them. Faith Hill, Martina Mcbride, Shania or any of those new cross over country singers.

1) Tennesee Waltz ( Patti Page ) -- REAL HEART BREAKER, TRY EVA CASSIDY's VERSION.

2) Stand By Your Man ( Tammy Wynnette ) -- NEVER PERFORMED ON THE SHOW.

3) CRAZY (Patsy Cline)

4) I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU ( Whitney Houston ) -- But listen to Dolly Parton's version

5) COLD DAY IN JULY ( Dixie Chicks )

Katharine -- Easiest for Bocelli to coach. Her broadway style is closest to his.

1) SOMEWHERE -- West Side Story

2) EVERGREEN -- Barbra Streisand

3) THE WAY WE WERE -- Barbra Streisand

4) SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU -- Whitney Houston

5) Almost Like Being In Love -- Jazz it up for a change.

ELLIOTT

1) ALL THE WAY -- Frank Sinatra

2) WHO CAN I TURN I TURN TO -- Sammy Davis Jr

3) HERE AND NOW -- Luther Vandros

4) TURN OFF THE LIGHTS -- Teddy Pendergrass

5) WITH THESE HANDS -- Tom Jones ( Bocelli knows this song and has performed it ). It'll require some vocal stretching but the ending is a bomb if Elliott can reach it.

6) IT's NOT UNUSUAL -- Tom Jones ( if Elliott wants to go upbeat).

7) CHANCES ARE -- Johnny Mathis

I'm not so sure it's about the contestants. There was an article posted a few days ago about how being on AI really boosts sales for those who do the gig.

Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart obviously helped when they were there. But the rest; it was pretty much of a train wreck.

One reason AI is so popular this year is that people really tuned in last year, when those talented contestants kept getting better. Besides that, the guest judge concept provided advice and something fresh from the judges.

Isn't it about time to let the contestants do some original material? What we don't need is more superstars who can't make anything original worth listening to.
