I'll bet your right, probably the last spot.

That seems to be the concensus. From the other site:

What the Pimp Spot means is that they think Chris will get to close the show

Netizen and GSC, I noticed your discussion of what rights AI obtains. It's use rights. Anyone who uses a copyrighted song for any commercial purpose must obtain use rights from the owner of the property. Usually that's the songwriter(s) or his/her heirs or assignees. It could also be someone who bought the songs outright. For example, Michael Jackson (and his creditors) own the Beatles catalog.

AI does not buy the songs they use, and they have had problems getting use rights to a lot of popular music.

If they wish to be fair (which they don't) everyone should get a shot at the last spot.

How long are the use rights good for?

No one in the "pimp spot" has been voted off the next day in the 5 years of the show (until it gets down to 3 people left).

Exactly. Which is why people are talking about it. Course, the rumors could be wrong. We shall see soon enough. :)

I like Simon, always have, but he clearly is trying to sabotage Taylor, imo. Taylor has such a huge fan-base, that it hasn't really mattered. Simon just sounds stupid and obvious saying what he does to Taylor after hearing the crowd reaction every time Taylor performs.

If they are only getting rights to use (sing) the songs and nothing else, why wouldn't you want to let someone else sing it? It would seem like a good means of advertising, to me. Especially, in a case where the singers are constestants and not likely to be better than the original. Somethimes they are but not generally.

Do you think if they gave it to Ace, it would help him? ;)

I used to like him because I thought he was fair and accurate. This season though he just isn't and more and more blogs and articles are being written about his rude comments to the contestants, instead of offering constructive criticism.

I used to think he was just being honest, and I think he was. But, he really doesn't seems to offer any help anymore, only insults.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy that sometimes, but when even sweet little Bucky complains about his lack of help, then you know something is wrong.

I am positive that I have read that AI pays like $1K or so per song to get licensing and that some owners have wanted more than AI wanted to pay, so those songs didn't get approval.

HEre are the latest song spoilers according to MJ's Big Blog (been accurate all year).

Kellie - Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (although some still report "Someone to Watch over me") -- Kellie is one of the ones reported to have had to make a last minute change, which could be why there are 2 spoilers.

Taylor - You Send Me. yes yes yes, hope this is true.

Elliot - It had to be you. Confirmed.

Chris - Night and Day. Confirmed

Paris - These Foolish Things. Another one with a last minute change so this may not be accurate

Katherine - The Way You Look Tonight. Rod is singing this tomorrow night so take this with a grain of Salt.

Ace - That's All - If true, what a song choice. One wonders if he is sending a message with this choice.

Waiting for Dress Rehearsal post to be put up -- will report if it is.

I know what you mean.

Tonight should be interesting, if it isn't a snoozer. Classics, yes, but mostly slooooow for the most part.

Waiting for the 'Rapper's behind bars' theme, or songs by people that had 'Big Hair', how about songs from Hee Haw. Or how about 'songs that got previous contestants sent home'. /sarcasm

If they are only getting rights to use (sing) the songs and nothing else, why wouldn't you want to let someone else sing it?

I don't know the answer to that question. I think the reason is as varied as people are varied. AI has been unable to obtain use rights to any Beatles songs, for example. Why? Who knows. Maybe Michael Jackson, who owns them these days, wanted more money than AI was willing to pay. Or maybe Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the two surviving Beatles, had a veto over their use. We've all noticed that Rod Stewart is not letting them use his original material, but only the great standards Stewart, himself, has covered in his recent albums.

Stewart is only one of hundreds of singers who have covered those great songs through the years. So, in my opinion, this is not really a Rod Stewart night. It's really a "great American songwriters" night.

As for use of a song on AI being good advertising, maybe. But look what happened on country night. Chris sang Keith Urban's smash hit, "Making Memories Of Us," and in his critique of Chris' performance, Simon said on national TV that it isn't a good song. How the heck do you think that made Urban and the songwriters feel when they heard that! And do you think they will want to let AI use any more of their material?

They are going to do a "songs of former American Idols" night. Simon has often slammed former AI winners and runners up. I can easily imagine him telling one of this year's favored contestants that they sang a song better than the original.

If I owned some highly successful songs, I sure as heck would not want them performed on AI where an arrogant Brit might slam them or me just for a dramatic moment that would keep the buzz about the show going.
