DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- A man running from a routine traffic stop early Tuesday sank waist-deep in mud and apparently died of exhaustion and cold while authorities tried to pull him out.
Deputies stopped Shawn E. Leflore, 33, for having an outdated registration sticker, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Don Peritz said.
"He thought he was wanted. That is why he ran," Peritz said. "But it turns out he wasn't wanted for anything, except his driver's license was expired."
Leflore ran about 700 yards off the road, where he got stuck in the mud, Peritz said. The weather was windy, and temperatures were in the upper 30s in the dark field, which had been saturated by heavy rain.
Deputies searched about an hour before finding him. They called for help and tried for another hour to pull him out, but Leflore died, Peritz said.
Peritz said officials believe Leflore suffered from exhaustion and exposure. Toxicology results were pending.
A passenger in Leflore's vehicle was not injured.

A literal dirt nap.
Consequences of a guilty conscience.
The only way this "mud mask" helped this guy is he's now having some
permanent weight loss.
Is it possible he'd done something worse than indicated here, about which the cops didn't yet know? Or was he just really dumb?
2 hours with temperatures in the upper 30's, waist deep in mud killed him? I think toxicology results will shed some light on this one. I'll bet there's another reason he was running.
Yes, I think exposure could kill someone in 2 hours, if it was near freezing and he was soaking wet. Plus he was probably in a state of panic and afflicted by shock.
Its called HYPOTHERMIA. He was wet, it was very windy that evening and cold. I can easily see how he could have died. Having been in the wilderness many times under these conditions, wet, cold, and wind....they are a very deadly combination that one must take very seriously.
Thanks the all caps thing helped me understand.
I've been out hunting in some bad stuff before. I'm pretty sure I could hold out - keeping a level head helps quite a bit.
I'll bet you a buck he was under the influence of something he shouldn't have been.
That's a Darwin Award Winner, for sure.
Sorry for the caps. I agree mental fortitude does help. But most people do not realize how deadly wet, wind and cold are.
The type of clothing he wore would also definitely be a factor. If he had a wool jacket he would last much longer. If he had cotton shirt and pants and they are wet, he might has well have been naked.

He needed to watch Chris Rock's video "How not to get your ass kicked by the police"

Especially the part about "If the cops have to chase you, they're bringing an ass-kicking with them..."
You'll just go to jail tired.
That's a great tagline.
Thanks...it was very important to me. When I read the book, in some ways, it changed my life.
"And the truth shall set you free."
That is how I felt....I actually put a page up on my website with Whittaker Chambers' "Letter to My Children". It is VERY powerful reading, and absolutely just as relevant today as it was back in the Fifties when he wrote it. If you are interested, you can read it at:

It is long, but if you know anything about what the Hiss Case boiled down to, it is boiled down in this letter written by Whittaker Chambers to his chidren for posterity.
