Word For The Day, Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - chouse
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 03/22/2006 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chouse • \CHOWSS ("OW" as in "cow")\ • verb

cheat, trick

Example sentence:

In Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities, Mr. Cruncher says, "If I ain't, what with piety and one blowed thing and another, been choused this last week into as bad luck as ever a poor devil of a honest tradesman met with!"

Did you know?
"You shall chouse him of Horses, Cloaths, and Mony," wrote John Dryden in his 1662 play Wild Gallant. Dryden was one of the first English writers to use "chouse," but he wasn't the last. That term, which may derive from a Turkish word meaning "doorkeeper" or "messenger," has a rich literary past, appearing in works by Samuel Pepys, Henry Fielding, Sir Walter Scott, and Charles Dickens, among others, but its use dropped off in the 20th century. In fact, English speakers of today may be more familiar with another "chouse," a verb used in the American West to mean "to drive or herd roughly." In spite of their identical spellings, though, the two "chouse" homographs are not related (and the origin of the latter is a source of some speculation).

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

The producers of another "reality show" hope to chouse the public into accepting its agenda regarding racism.
Truth in "Black. White."

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

Get to class, you slackers! I've opened a new classroom, but Miss Rika has the gradebook. So if you're looking for a grade you'll have to ping her. Miss Slippy is pretty generous with the plusses if you compliment her shapely legs, so you might try submitting your homework to her instead. My secret for getting extra plusses on my A+ from xs will remain a secret between me and her, so you're on your own if you want her to review your work.

Look at you first in class, sitting on the front row with the low-cut tank top to impress the teacher.

There are a lot of threads today with which to dawdle.

Did you hear the story about the family who took a trip to Oregon and were snowed in for three weeks in their motorhome? They used dried food and MREs to make it through. There were six of them. Two of them finally went on foot to get help. They all survived with no problem, thank goodness. But I have a problem with the story:

Why no CB or cell phone. Granted a cell phone might not be able to work. I think I would have used flares on top of the motorhome in a bucket of water, of course. Everyone is praising them for their survival skills, but I, myself, think they are idiots.

Remember when we used to send FReepmails to each other as a distraction just as we thought Miss Rika was about to open a new classroom. The competition to be the first one to post in the new classroom was quite funny.
