Why I Support President Bush and the ZOT!
Posted on 03/19/2006 6:29:28 AM PST by thousand dollar hamburger
I think he has a sincere desire to help everyone. he has even gone out of his way to embrace people like Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. He does not hold grudges as shown by his willingness to bend over backwards to allow terrorist supporting nations to operate our ports. We need this type of benevolent leader.
Our President is not a cheapskate, as he has opened up our budget to give to anyone who might need anything.
Aliens from all nations are welcomed into our great country without having to deal with mundane bureaucratic State approval. Cutting government red tape -- that's the Bush way!
Yes, our Prseident even realizes that occupying as many countries around the world as possible is the best way to spread American ideals.
We are truly lucky to have this great man. I suggest that at 10:00 AM EST, we all stand up in unison and shout -- HOORAY FOR BUSH!!!

Plus we can get breakfast anytime, or dinner, just by moving between habitats. It's a good system. Do we have waitstaff that delivers the meals?
To: Genesis defender
No waitstaff, but most "residences" in the castle have an automated delivery system for small packages.
How it works is described in "Chapter Seventeen" on my home page.
Something like a bank pneumatic tube system, but electric.

rounds one, two, and three of the Spawn of the Mad Bastard came and went today.
the kids came by at 8am and woke me... after a late night spending some time with tWoI, so I was a little grumpy to be roused from slumber so early ;)
none of them brought the signed written permission slips I had required them to bring, so they got their first taste of Da Rulz:
No Obey, No Play.
I sent them home, telling them I'd go harvest some bamboo on my own, and that they should return WITH PARENTAL PERMISSION IN HAND at noon, when I would teach them the basic principles of how to split bamboo with a hookblade and mallet.
end round one.
I slugged a pot of mud and traipsed off into the woods, selected two 3" diameter beauties to harvest, sawed them down, and sectioned them into three 6foot+ lengths each.
toting them out of the woods was less fun than it would have been had I a pack-frame (or 3 apprenticed pack mules) for the purpose, but...
end round two.
Harvesting took far less time than I had anticipated, so I actually sought out their parents after cutting down the bamboo.
Found 'em.
Let them know the score, and left them to sort out the kids.
At noon, three extremely contrite would-be bowyers showed up at my gate, ready to sit down, shut up, and take instruction.
which they got.
I didn't think it would be wise to hand them the blade I use to split bamboo - it is an evil, big, and wicked sharp incurved blade, but...
- I let them participate in examining the bamboo to find the straightest "sides" of the bamboo.
- I showed them how to find those straight sides
- I explained why nothing organic of any size is really straight
- I showed them how to brace and split the bamboo, using mallet and blade, bracing with the knife-foot (you'd have to see this to grok what I mean)
- I spent quite some time showing and explaining to them the bamboo's inner structure, showing them and letting them see for themselves how and why bamboo is both light and strong.
- I explained why quartering while fresh is required, and why curing is required before any further woodwork is done
- I explained that the months in which the bamboo cures shall be spent in designing and building the bending forms out of 2x8 pine... that they shall be doing some of the math math and drafting, and all of the hand-sawing, planing, filing, and sanding to make these forms.
I took their names, ages, heights, and draw lengths:
Kris, 9 yrs, 53.5" tall, 23" draw
Willie, 10 yrs, 54.25" tall, 21.5" draw
Wilson, 7 yrs, 51" tall, 21" draw
as they all have very similar draw lengths, and as they shall all outgrow these bows soon enough, and as these bows are certainly never intended to be used for competitive targetry or hunting, this fact is convenient - it allows me to have each kid make exactly the same form, and to actually use the best one to make all three bows.
this will keep the disastrous-mess potential of the glue-up to a minimum.

if even one of these kids sticks to the process to the end, I'll be well pleased to have so well spent my time. we'll see what happens when the drudgery begins... hand-sawing across the grain of the forms' wood, hand-planing, hand-filing, hand-sanding... we'll see.
I have hopes, but we'll see.

BRAVO!!!!
I am duly impressed, KP! It sounds as if you have a good group of students and some parents who care. I suspect you are also an excellent instructor.
I would like to have been a fly on a wall, then...better yet, one of your students. :o]
