Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Had to put a new belt on the blower in the furnace(I changed the motor Monday, and found out that the old belt that LOOKED "perfect" was really ready to go any second). It took about 30 seconds to change it. Now, the old girl(as in 1978 ) should be ok for awhile---and it is getting COLD here, so that is a plus!!

I had planned to go to an Estes auction in Medina, (about 200 miles north of me) but the guy I was planning to ride with pulled out, and I didn't want to drive this time(gas is too expensive, etc.) I will probably find out he went anyway, and lied to me. It HAS happened before, in this case(the auction) and many other cases, since i have been a kid.

Had an average work week, nothing bad happened, just a LOT of lifting and road-calls(with the owner along.

The girls are getting ready to watch "yours, mine and ours"(the remake) and I may join them.

Yeah, at my place, we still have a few computer problesm that affected the scanning in of documents. Today, had to take two kitties to the vets, Pansy and Greystone. Pansy, will be 19 in August, well we are checking her thyroid values, lost a half a pound but then she is very active and runs it off a lot. She played al ot of fetch last week as well as played a lot at night while howling at 3 AM. Greystone, well, it looks like he's got some sort of infection, he wasn't eating for a week and if it is an infection, if might have gotten into his kidneys and shut them down for the most part so he was admitted and will be given fluids to wash out the crap in his bloodstream as well as antibiotics. Hopefully, this will kick start his kidneys. The poor guy is not even 5 years old yet (will be next month). I don't want to lose him and I pray that I don't.

Right now, I hear Pansy playing and hollering.

We have pictures galore and right now my BIL is trying to get pix from my camera to his wife's computer.

Once I am back at home I can upload on high speed and get them posted.

Phil and I were testing out my new camera and showing his niece how to use it before the wedding and in part of the good fun, we did the Kerry/Heinz-Kerry pose where ol' Teresa seemed to be squeamish from lurch's affection...and we will put that one up, too.

Thank you to all for the many warm wishes!

Most others had gone to bed and I got very tired. So after saying goodbye to a bunch of people I just left. Figured that sooner or later people would figure it out.

It was 2:30. Pretty late.

I see the thread died right about that time anyway.

But it is back to life now. LOL.

Its supposed to be a Friday and Saturday evening thread, but sometimes it spreads to Sunday evening too.

Nothing wrong with that, its up and running anyway.

Watched the drag races from Gainsville, FL tonight on ESPN. The best cars go from 0 to 320+ MPH in a quarter-mile from a dead stop. The engines make 7,000 horsepower and they have to rebuild them after every quarter mile run.

I think the people who drive those cars are at least a little crazy.

Drag racing is something that I don't plan on doing anytime in my future. LOL! I like watching races, but I don't care to go too fast myself.
