Yes folks, this is a mans barbeque. Thats Tim Kowalec firing up Chrysler Group's one-of-a-kind HEMI-powered grill at an event to announce the top five finalists in the companys "What Can You HEMI?" contest. Until the event, the HEMI engine was only found in Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicles. With the power and torque of the 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI engine, the grill can cook 240 HEMI dogs in three minutes and is covered by more than 330 square feet of steel. The contest involved people sending in concepts for machines that could be powered by a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. Five of the best ideas became semi-finalists and Chrysler engineers then built working models of the concept machines. The event was won by a Hemi-powered trike with a custom 4-foot wheel (bottom left image) but some serious machinery filled the placings such as the Hemi Snowblower (centre) and Hemi paper shredder.

The five finalists included a Snowblower, Ice resurfacer, a Merry-go-round and the worlds most powerful Paper Shredder. We have pictures of all of them inside.

Marcus Braun of Vancouver, BC, was named the grand prize winner for being the mastermind behind the HEMI Trike, an adult adaptation of a childhood toy powered by a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. The HEMI engine that took the hottest new Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles to new levels in power and technology has now done it again for these HEMI-powered creations, said Frank Klegon, Chrysler Group Vice President- Product Development Process and Components. While all five finalists and their ideas were brilliant, the HEMI Trike stood out for its high marks in creativity, engineering feasibility, safety and functionality. Chrysler Group launched the What Can You HEMI? contest in February in celebration of the legendary HEMI engine. With That Thing Got a HEMI? becoming a household phrase -- serving as a constant reminder that anything with a HEMI engine is truly top notch -- Chrysler Group asked consumers the question: If you could infuse the power and torque of the 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI engine into anything, what would it be? Contestants had to submit their idea in a brief essay and support it with a sketch. Contest information was available online at www.WhatCanYouHemi.com. More than 360 aspiring inventors submitted their wildest ideas before the postmark deadline. "Since its introduction to the public in 1951, the HEMI engine has revolutionized the automotive industry and fascination over the original muscle car engine continues today," said Klegon. "This contest was about extending the same power, torque and technology of the all-new 5.7-liter HEMI to make the ordinary, extra-ordinary and to have a lot of fun doing it."
HEMI Engine History
The HEMI engine was first made popular in 1951 when Chrysler Corporation introduced its entry in the post-war horsepower race. Its power and efficiency made it an instant favorite for all sorts of motorsports vehicles. Although reluctantly retired in 1959 due to high manufacturing costs, the HEMI design was still unsurpassed. In 1964, NASCAR competition sparked the HEMI's return, and it has remained available for motorsport use ever since. Chrysler Group debuted the all-new modern 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine in 2002 on the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500. With more than 500,000 engines sold, the take-rate across the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge lineups is approximately 44%.

Update: The new 6.1 Hemi makes 425 bhp, has 10.3 to 1 compression, 30% bigger ports and hollow, sodium filled valves like the old Ford 427 SOHC engine used to have.
Chrysler is also coming out with a 392 cube hemi crate engine for racing only that has 505 hp.

The 425 horsepower, normally aspirated (no supercharger) 6.1-liter Hemi matches the gross horsepower rating of the 426 Hemi engine exactly, albeit with lower torque (420 versus 490 lb-ft). It seems to beat the Elephant Engine's net horsepower, which has various sources have pegged at between 330 and (again) 425. In short, the 6.1 Hemi is the closest any V8 has come to the most successful stock racing V8 to come out of Detroit - and it gets better gas (and oil) mileage.
The SRT group uses traditional HEMI engine cues such as an orange-painted cylinder block and black valve covers. Greater power was achieved by boring the cylinders (increasing their diameter) by 3.5 mm each; they also increased the compression ratio from 9.6:1 to 10.3:1, and made other changes as detailed below.
Engine breathing was increased with new high-flow cylinder heads, a specially designed intake manifold, and exhaust headers with individual tubes encased in a stainless steel shell, all unique to the 6.1-liter Hemi. Larger diameter valves and reshaped cylinder ports in the heads maximize air flow. The intake manifold was designed with larger diameter runners for higher-speed tuning. Exhaust is routed through a larger-diameter (2.75-inch vs. 2.5-inch) exhaust system with 3.5-inch chrome tips.
Performance-oriented camshaft profiles were developed to balance total vehicle requirements, allowing more air in and out of cylinders. This increases performance and allows a higher top engine speed, 6,200 revolutions per minute (rpm) rather than the stock Hemi's 5,400 rpm. Intake and exhaust valve stems are hollow, and the exhaust valve stems are filled with sodium to help dissipate heat more efficiently.
The 6.1-liter Hemi V8 engine is further strengthened with redesigned components, including a reinforced engine block with increased coolant flow, forged steel crankshaft, high-strength powdered-metal connecting rods, floating-pin pistons (cooled by oil squirters), and an oil pan modified for reduced oil foaming.

The new racing only Hemi:
The just-announced-at-SEMA 6.4 liter version, at a historic 392 cubic inches, due in 2008 with the Dodge Challenger, does the SRT-8 one better, and we'd like to know how since the extra size isn't all that much. It generates a full 505 horsepower. Because its a crate engine for racing only, its quite possible that some sacrifices made for gas mileage and emissions reduction in even the SRT-8 version have been removed.

As of yesterday (Feb. 9), Challenger was given a go by management. Model year unknown. 6.1 liter Hemi and 6-speed manual transmission only. Der Spien, a former engineer with DCX.
The Hemi has 425 hp, 420 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed manual transmission. So geared, with its 4,100 pound weight, it can do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds (with 20 inch wheels on front and 21 inch wheels on back), and runs the quarter mile in 13 seconds flat; top speed is 174 mph (limited by wind resistance), while gas mileage is estimated at 14 city, 20 highway, very good compared with the original Challenger. Brakes are more effective than the original - stopping from 60 mph can be done in 133 feet.
