Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on the news that Isaac Hayes has quit South Park because of an episode that attacked his religion, the Church of Scientology:
It is nothing short of amazing to read that South Park co-creator Matt Stone is now charging Isaac Hayes with intolerance and bigotry for not complaining earlier about all the shows South Park did making fun of Christians. Forget about Hayesthe real issue here is the two-faced, super-bratty response from Stone. For him to lecture Hayes on intolerance and bigotry is on the order of John Gotti lecturing Curtis Sliwa on ethics. After all, it was on South Park last year that they depicted the Virgin Mary spraying blood from her vagina. How would Stone know anything about tolerance?
And now we learn that Stone and his buddy Trey Parker were moved to take a shot at Scientology because they were ticked off that their equally foul-mouthed friend, Penn Jillette, was banned from ripping Scientology on his crude Showtime series, Bulls - - t. Forget about Stone and Parkerthe real issue here is the cowardly, hypocritical response from Jillette. Last year, Jillette went on a rampage against Mother Teresa calling her Mother F- - king Teresa. Yet this same big oaf hasnt got the guts to slam Scientologists for fear of upsetting his bigoted boss, Sumner Redstone (he is chairman of Viacom, which owns Showtime). As for Redstone, he wrote to me last August defending Jillettes assault on Mother Teresa saying we as an organization are committed to artistic freedom. Not when it comes to Scientologiststheir penchant for filing lawsuits scares the daylights out of him.
What does it take to get the New York-Hollywood gang to stop with their Catholic bashing? Threats of beheadings? Threats of lawsuits? Seems that way. What ever happened to common decency?
You seem awfully obsessed with a show you don't watch.
But you're just flat wrong. They've skewered muslims most happily of all, in whatever way fit the story of the moment. If the scripts haven't met with your satisfaction, perhaps you could send them some of your ideas.
I didn't say they were fearless, I said they were ~good~.
"Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time."

Yes, they do.
And to show that, in just about any context other than medical, is crude. To show that of a religious figure, or a symbol of a religious figure, is both crude and offensive.
But you may not hold anything sacred...and thus you may be unable to be offended in that manner. And if so, that is very sad.
Matt and Trey are supposedly 'scared' because they don't do a Muslim episode. Of course they made fun of Al Qaeda, they made fun of the ME in general in the Christmas episode, but because they don't dedicate an entire episode to Mohammed they're 'scared'. Maybe there's just not enough jokes to support 30 minutes on Mohammed? I don't know. But considering how those two have lampooned just about everything in our culture, the last thing I would say is they're 'scared'
Agreed! I didn't know "fearless" was a litmus test for good comedy. I always thought "funny" was...
Silly me...
But Muhammad's posse has them wetting their depends.
You won't see the South Park boyz insult Muhammad, and not because there isn't terrifically funny material for them to work with. It's because they want to keep their heads firmly attached to their bodies. Can't blame them for choosing life, I guess. They've made all that money insulting everyone else on the planet, they figure they ought to be allowed to enjoy it.
Please quit talking about that. It's repulsive.
:-)
Taranto in the WSJ said it almost as well as Stone did:
"Well, after all, it's one thing to mock Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Catholics, Evangelicals, blacks, gays, whites, Mexicans, Asians, Canadians, Frenchmen, people with birth defects, women, transsexuals, Democrats, Republicans, lawyers, cops, cows, people with red hair and freckles, goths, the handicapped and fat kids. But satirizing Scientology--that's just intolerant!"
Yes, thanks for running ES's list during his timeout.
what isn't there a fatwa against with that pathetic excuse of a religion?
Parker and pal are scared sh*tless to do it.
Patience, my FRiend, patience. After the whole cartoon debacle, I'm sure Mighty Mo will find himself on the South Park docket sooner or later.
But what makes Mary so special within the Catholic Church is she is more than "religious figure" she's a human being. And God, perfect in every way, chose a human, imperfect in many ways to bring the world his only Son. God could have easily sent down a fully formed Jesus, but he chose to work with Mary. We should be celebrating her bleeding, because that is hope for everybody about how close we can come to God.
To deny any aspect of Mary's humanness, is to reduce God's Love and Power.
Good thing you didn't; you'd be dead by now, otherwise.
We only wallow in it to point out how repulsive, offensive, and vile it is.
Thinking about it all the time makes us feel clean and pure.
What is it exactly that you want them to use from Islam that is worthy of 30 minutes? You could say the cartoon thing, but it would essentially be a retread of several episodes they have done about people over reacting over nothing. Find the Muslims doing something ridiculous and worthy of lampooning during a season of SP, and drop them a line asking to see an episode about it. If your wondering, the new season starts a week from tomorrow.
They are my kind of effin slimeballs.
I agree, and our antics should be mocked. The miracle of true Christianity is that when we are mocked, that we don't burn buildings and behead people, but we can actully love them.
