Woman runs into courthouse waving paint roller, deputies injured 'Let my people go!'
By Joe Nelson, Staff Writer
JOSHUA TREE - A woman brandishing a paint roller attachment and yelling "Let my people go!" charged into the courthouse here Monday, attacking a sheriff's sergeant before she was tackled, subdued and arrested. Vickie Hill, 53, of Twentynine Palms, ran through the entrance doors to the courthouse at Highway 62 and Whitefeather Road about 9:15 a.m. waving the makeshift weapon. She dashed around the metal detectors and into the lobby screaming, sheriff's Sgt. Steve Spear said.
The 16-inch piece of black plastic clutched by Hill, used to extend the length of a paint roller handle, resembled a baton, said Spear.
Spear, who is also a Twentynine Palms councilman, was in his office when the commotion started. He said he entered the lobby and saw Hill standing there with a blank expression.
"I said `Drop the weapon!' " said Spear. "She turned around and said, `Let my people go.' I said, `Drop the weapon!' `She said, `Let my people go!' "
Spear said he withdrew his metal extendible baton and approached Hill.
"And she starts to beat me with her plastic thing," Spear said. "She's going high, and I'm going for zone two, which was her legs."
Spear said he got about three whacks in to Hill's legs and nearly felled her, and she did about the same damage to his arms and back.
"I'd say it was about an even match," Spear said.
Then entered Deputy Dave Henley, who saw Spear fending off Hill's blows with his arm.
"So he runs towards her to knock her off balance, because his perception is she's knocking me down with a pipe, and his momentum carries him into a steel door jamb and he splits his head open," Spear said.
Henley was taken to High Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree and received 26 stitches to his head. The wound was so deep Henley required both internal and external sutures, Spear said.
Henley will be off work for at least a week to recover, Spear said.
Hill's husband, who was attending a hearing for traffic violations in one of the two courtrooms at the small building, was unaware of the assault until he came out and started looking for his wife, whom he left waiting in the car, Spear said.
"He was apologetic. He said, `I told her to stay in the car,' " Spear said.
The woman was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for treatment of high blood pressure. Ultimately, she will be taken to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. She faces charges of assault on a peace officer, Spear said.
Spear didn't require hospitalization.
"My arm hurts like hell, though," he said.
Hmmm, "zone two?" New addition to my pillow talk vocabulary.
She's been warming up for that all day.
She was driven crazy by boredom and this weird weather! ;o)
You can just see the guy's expression at the time saying this...
Hope they're prepared for the plague of frogs.
Too much PBS and Dummy-uground.

And we can now refer to "Zone 2" and Freeperettes won't know what we are referring to..... :-)
sounds like attempted suicide-by-cop.
I am so surprised you didn't post this one!
I am laughing so hard I am crying.
I remember the first time I got Zone 2 with a girl.... *sigh*
I can see it now:
"I wouldn't turn down an invitation to zone two."
"Wow, check out zone two."
"He's just trying to gain access to zone two."
"That's no way to get to zone two."
She didnt later "beat you with a plastic thing" did she?
No, although I begged and begged.
Not just ouch, but @@%#*!*##$ Ouch!!!
Maybe she thought she was on the Fresh Prince of Bel Aire and was trying to get to the cell to help sing "Let My People Go".
