Did South Park Predict Brokeback Mountain?
Slash Film ^ | 03/03/2006 | Jon Mezzera

South Park has done several great episodes lampooning popular films. One of my personal favorites involves the children dressed up like Lord of the Rings characters taking a pornography tape back to the video store while avoiding the temptation of watching it and trying to escape some older kids who want the tape for themselves. While I’ve never been a big fan of the show, I have grown more fond of it lately, and I’m pretty sure I watched every episode this season. Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are capable of being very topical in that they can write, record, and animate a show in about a week, unlike a show like The Simpsons which takes much longer. For this reason, I was a little surprised that they didn’t do a show this last season about Brokeback Mountain. But now I realize that they did, six years ago!

I was watching a syndicated rerun last night of an episode that didn’t look familiar. I was interested because the plot involved a Sundance-like film festival coming to town and how that affected everyone. Part of the plot involved Mr. Garrison having his students go to see one independent film at the festival to write a paper about it. While the kids are trying to figure out what “independent film” means, Stan is afraid it means films like Independence Day because it sucks, which I found very funny. Cartmen then claims that independent films are usually black and white hippie films about “gay cowboys eating pudding.” I thought to myself, “I must have missed this episode this year.” But I had a feeling based on the animation and voices which have changed over the years that this was not a recent episode. Plus I was fairly sure I had seen them all last season.

Later in the show, Stan and Wendy go to a film at the festival and sure enough, when the cowboys are finished eating their pudding they decide to explore their sexuality with each other. I was amazed and really curious as to when the episode aired. After the credits, I found that it was from 1998! I know that Brokeback Mountain is based on a story, but could it be that the writers of the story as well as the movie had seen an episode of South Park several years ago and thought to themselves, “Hmm. Gay Cowboys. Cut out the pudding and we’ve got ourselves an Oscar winner.”

I would have thought by now they would have done an episode on the Muslims freaking out over the Danish cartoons, but so far no luck. Can you imagine? Cartman draws a picture of Mohammed and gets a Fatwah on his head and instead Kenny gets killed. "Oh s**t dude! They just killed Kenny! These guys are crazy!" lol!

The rumor I heard, from someone low down inside Hollywierd, is that Ang Lee was pissed about how he was trashed over The Hulk and declared that he was going to "win the Oscar if it killed them."

He has been sympathetic to gay themes in his movies before, but I think this was 100% calculation.   He set out to make a movie about "gay cowboys eating pudding."  That was the premise and it was designed to win awards. Of course, racists in LA will always trump gays in Wyoming.

Larry McMurtry just provided a convenient hook.

McMurty has ruined Lonesome Dove for me, however,

Well, I know that I'm going to hell. I made my 81 year old Aunt watch "A Woodland Critter Christmas."

My fate is sealed.

That was a great episode. Except the part where the cubs watched abortions being performed. I didn't like that part.

Matt and Trey need to sue the producers for stealing their idea.

Cowboy: Say, Tom. Do you have any pudding left?

Tom: I ate all mine up, silly.

Cowboy: Well then, now what do we do?

Cowboy: Well, why don't we just explore our sexuality?

Tom: Ooh, good idea. Let's. [they hug, and the cowboy drops to work on Tom's pants]

You didn't see the film -- they did the "pudding" thing in a pup tent.

Heard on a Boston sports radio station (spoofing old Foster's
ads) : "Drink Brokeback
Ale from Australia. Brokeback. It's Australian for queer."

Matt and Trey need to sue the producers for stealing their idea.
Trey said (half kiddingly) that if there was any pudding eating in the movie, he was suing.

South Park also had Cartman pretend to be retarded to enter the Special Olympics a couple years ago, and the producers of "Ringer" tried to complain that the idea was stolen from them.

There have been no new SP episodes made since the Battle of Kartoon. New epis start coming out on 3/22, I do believe, and I think there will be eight in a typical "season". I would be very surprised if they don't address this issue.
