Anyone Interested in a FReeper Weight Loss and Exercise Thread? (Vanity)

A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.

Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.

Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.

NO VERBAL ATTACKS! NO NAME CALLING! NO BASHING! THE OVERWEIGHT! NO NASTY PICTURES POSTED! This will be a thread about getting healthy and no attacks will be tolerated.

I don't know, I've not tried that. I'll look into it.

When I had done one type of exercise (weight training and aerobics) for years and years, it was like moving into a completely foreign territory to find "no impact" anything. I have just done nothing for 2 years now, because I was too afraid to try anything that may cause me more pain or damage to my spine....the ultimate goal for me is maintaining my spine for the next 60 years (or however long I live!)

Thanks for that input.

It is very fun. I tell my wife it is like having sex in public and nobody noticing. I was astonished when I first learned of the sport/hobby; all this going on and we didn't even know it?

I have devised some rather clever hides including:

1) Suspend a microcache in storm drains on a fishing line.
2) Hanging caches in trees with a retrieving line about 6.5 feet off the ground. EVERYONE looks for the cache on the ground.
3) Take a piece of limb that has fallen, cut it in half, hollow out the center and hide a cache in the hollow. You can use hinges and a latch to hold it shut.
4) Knot holes in trees are superb spots.

It really is fun. I try to hide mine right out in the open, but where the "muggles" as we call them would never look.

Yes, I joined in 2001 after losing 37lbs. I try to go 5 days a week, for at least an hour. Tomorrow will be my 6th day in a row. I'm working out with a trainer tomorrow and Saturday was the only day that we both had available.

Yes.

Go 4-5 days a week, do generally 2-3 days of Cardio 30 minutes plus cool down on the eliptical and 2 days of weight training. I also play sports 3 times a week.

I joined a gym at the beginning of this year, mainly to get back into shape before the start of the next sport season. I play various sports, but they have a break from early Nov to late Jan... and due to scheduling issues I hadn't played a sport that required serious cardio/endurance in nearly 9 months.. so I wanted to get back into shape and lose weight as well, as the sports were great, but I wasn't losing weigh with what I was doing.

The gym is a block from my office. I go during my lunch hour which is great, because it doesn't interfere with the rest of my day. If I had to go before work or after work I would very likely fall out of the habbit. It helped on two fronts, I NEED to get out of my office for my lunch hour daily, otherwise I'll go insane... and I found I was spending that hour in a sit down restraunt eating 500-700 calories daily for my lunch... So, the gym gave me something else to do with that time.. and now I pick up a bowl of soup after my workout and only eat about 100-150 cals for lunch at my desk, plus burn about 400-500 calories a workout as well... so double whammy.

Now I have lost weight in the past, mainly by just dieting and some moderate exercising, this is the first time I have consistently done weight training and cardio and this sort of activity level since high school.. This time however I have noticed that the weight is coming off much more slowly, even though I am far more active than I have been in a LONG LONG time. I suspect mostly it is due to muscle build up replacing fat loss in my early stage... I have been doing this now for about 2 months and I have only lost about 10-12 lbs... typically when I just diet I would lose that in 1 month.. however I am definately in MUCH better physical condition, and toner.

I am not one of those guys who loves the gym.. I hate it... but I can't argue with the results... It must be doing something, because my wife's friends are starting to make comments.. I think she's getting a bit nervous.

I really like WW. I never feel deprived. I just have to prioritize if I want something higher calorie or if I know we are going out. Usually there is something on the menu that is WW friendly. And light beer is only 2 points. :-D

Good for you! Why not have a thread for this? It may very well help some of us to get or stay in shape.

Are you really an Irish tenor? That is my favorite type of voice. Nothing more beautiful than Danny Boy in Irish Tenor.

I have followed the Atkins program for 2 1/2 years. I used to suffer from horrible depression and, even tho I still get a bit depressed in the winter/dark cold days, It is nowhere near as bad as before I started the diet. I have lost over 100 lbs. and could loose 20 more if I would just do regular exercise.

I know what you mean. I went on the South Beach diet a few years ago and lost 10 lbs - more than I wanted to lose - and when we get older, we don't look very good being too thin.

It's almost like a cot but theres a strap over your head and foot rests, you do sit ups with it but it supports your head and neck, and your legs. No jarring at all.

There is a good low carb show on the food channel. You can access their recipes on line as well.

Thank you for your response! You are informative.

So do you have an actual program that I could follow? I would be interested in seeing it, and checking it out with my neurosurgeon. ( I have an appointment coming up.)

Once again, I must emphasize the "no" impact and no jarring of the spine, or stressing of the neck/shoulder area. I am also not to lift more than 5 lbs or raise my arms above my head, if at all possible.

Add me to the list, babycakes.

If you do, I'll post some beefcake pictures of me when I reach my goal.

I'll even wear a speedo. :)

My wife and I use the Ab-Lounger. It is very good for the stomach. You can vary the intensity by where you hold the bar or where you rest your feet. You can lay on your side to do you obliques.

If you can sit in a recliner, you can use the Ab-Lounger.

We got the one off of QVC. It has a bar for the hands and is a little better in my opinion.
