Who Was the Greatest Chess Player Ever...???
Posted on 03/08/2006 1:46:04 PM PST by Cyropaedia
Now for something completey different.
OK, who was the greatest chess player ever...??
My personal vote goes to the nineteenth century's Paul Morphy. No other champion dominated his contemporaries the way Morphy dominated his peers.

No other champion was as far ahead of his time.

And what a miserable kook he is. America finally gets a great Chess Player and he turnes out to be someone like that? To be fair, he's clearly mentally ill.

Thanks, and to think I only needed to wait 5 seconds more. Wow, looks like he's really going down hill now. I think my pic is about 2-3 years old.

I'll put in a vote for Lasker. Really? Over Morphy? I think if they played Morphy still beats him (with adequate preparation).

A case could be made for Bobby Fischer as he accomplished all he did without a organized chess program. I know too little about chess to take a position.
I did play Fischer in the 60's. He made an appearance at Penn State and played about 40 people at once. I happened to be in the rec center and a friend said lets go see him. Wound up playing as there weren't enough players and lasted about 8 moves. The guy was haughty and very ungracious, sneering at his opponents.
Still a turd, I guess.
