A case could be made for Bobby Fischer as he accomplished all he did without a organized chess program. I know too little about chess to take a position.

I did play Fischer in the 60's. He made an appearance at Penn State and played about 40 people at once. I happened to be in the rec center and a friend said lets go see him. Wound up playing as there weren't enough players and lasted about 8 moves. The guy was haughty and very ungracious, sneering at his opponents.

Still a turd, I guess.
