IBM will not use Windows Vista - but will move to Linux desktops

IBM switching to Linux destops in Germany according to a Linux Forum 2006 presentation by their head of open source and Linux sales in Germany.

Interesting news from LinuxForum 2006

During a presentation on IBM's involvement with Open Source, Andreas Pleschek from IBM in Stuttgart, Germany, who heads open source and Linux technical sales across North East Europe for IBM made a very interesting statement...

"Andreas Pleschek also told that IBM has cancelled their contract with Microsoft as of October this year. That means that IBM will not use Windows Vista for their desktops. Beginning from July, IBM employees will begin using IBM Workplace on their new, Red Hat-based platform. Not all at once - some will keep using their present Windows versions for a while. But none will upgrade to Vista."

The question is, does this only apply to IBM in Germany, or IBM world wide?

If ALL of IBM switches to Linux desktops and OpenOffice... that would be a very significant loss to Microsoft; not only in direct licensing revenues, but also in speeding adoption of Linux by other companies. After all, if IBM can run on Linux desktops...

You have to wonder how many folks SCO has managed to sucker into that? 5? 10?

This doesn't count Microsoft using these licenses as a way to fund SCO's FUD campaign.

I thought about buying one so I could sue them for fraud, but I decided that they would be out of money by the time I could get to judgment.

Commie capitalists! How DARE they decide to run a partially internally-developed system instead of paying Microsoft! Microsoft must be paid by all good capitalists, to do otherwise is communist!

You mean they're not done YET? They already sent a memo to all their employees saying they should be done by 2005.

Are you stupid enough to think that complex rollouts of this magnitude are something that can be done over a weekend or something?

There are many companies out there that still haven't completed migration to MS-Windows XP, and it's been out for how long now? Speaking of which, how long as Longhorn Vista been delayed? Aren't they YEARS behind schedule on that?

Your trolling is unoriginal today. Don't you have some other talking points this week?

BTW, unless you have something to actually contribute to the thread, don't bother posting to me.

Maybe the problem was they were waiting from MS to finish Vista to cost justify the move... ;) Being tied to that moving mark could push off any project..

Nope, I'm just pointing out how ridiculous it is to be announcing something that's supposedly already been underway, and was supposed to be already completed last year.

Now we even have IBM trying to retract this announcement now, too.

And you're somehow worried about the accuracy of my posts! ROFLMAO!

Well it still sounds like IBM didn't re-up their contracts with your master. That's gonna hurt; No Vista at IBM, No Office at IBM, and hey, if IBM can operate w/out winders....

Did you hear the speaker? Do you have a transcript of his remarks? How do you know he characterized it as an "announcement". It could very well be that he was commenting on their ongoing effort. If you look at the groklaw link above, you'll see that the comments about the transition to Linux was not the extent of his remarks, nor did they appear to be even the majority of his talk.

Concerning the above, did you even bother to read the linked article in Heise Online? The article indicates that only a very small subset of workers would remain on MS-Windows, and it didn't indicate that they would or would not be upgraded to Vista.

According to the Heise article, they evaluation of Vista hasn'e been completed yet.

"Windows Vista werde derzeit evaluiert, eine Entscheidung sei noch nicht gefallen."

Well obviously they can't, even though they've been claiming they could for years. IBM's scorched earth attack on Microsoft and Apple has only burned their own company. Revenues are down, they're selling their hardware business to the Chinese, according to WSJ their CEO just took a $5 million/year paycut, which he should, since the stock is down 30 percent since he took over. But go ahead and claim they're doing better than Apple and MS, even though those two are at record profits, LMAO.

Andreas Pleschek from IBM in Stuttgart, Germany, *who heads open source and Linux technical sales*.....

Why wouldn't he say that? His performance isn't based on
MS seat growth, but on OS and Linux growth.
