FR Folding@Home Project Update - We're in the Top 190 teams (A Tribute to Ronald Reagan)

Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 188th place (with 940 CPUs - 15,725 completed Work Units and 2,330,000 points)

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

Yeah, that's 2107, it is a massive 400 point job. I now have two processors on that and one on 2106!

I'm concerned about this:

[00:51:14] - Looking at optimizations...

[00:51:14] - Working with standard loops on this execution.

[00:51:14] - Previous termination of core was improper.

If you're on a PC there's a thing called "SSE boost" that makes these projects fold faster. If the core shuts down improperly it may restart without running these optimizations. Try shutting down the folding program and opening it again, then look at the new entries in the log file. It should say something like "Extra SSE Boost ok" after it checks for optimizations. That will make it go much faster.

You are getting progress, it's just going to be slow. The log file will only report completion every 200,000 steps, but you can see from the starting step ("Completed 2507638 out of 20000000 step") that it is folding.

WhooHoo

Since the day AT&T bought Bell South, my phone line will not stay connected. I bet I've had to dial back up at least 35-40 already today. At this rate, I'll never fold another unit.

It doesn't need to be online all the time while folding, just to upload a finished job and download a new one. I guess this would take a varying amount of time depending on the size of the WU, but I think the largest WU downloads are only 5 MB, most much less. Looks like one I just finished was 1.2 MB?

You do know that your computer will fold away without being connected to the Internet? All you need is a connection to send in the completed work unit and to get a new folding unit.

I do now. I can finally stop worrying about it. What a relief.

I just went through technical support with bell south. They changed so many settings concerning my modem. I have been getting between 7&12 kpbs. Now I'm getting about 115.2. I almost feel out of my chair when I saw that number. I figured an angel was on my shoulder when every blue moon I recieved 14 kpbs.

"Should be...kbps"

That's ok, we all make mistakes.

So, is that conservative talk radio or one of those golden oldies stations?   /just teasing    ;^D

Now I'm getting about 115.2.
Hey, that's great! That's a pretty substantial change.

It's been cranking on this for a while, and I tried rebooting it yesterday. It's saying that it has over 13 days to go, and this CPU is on 24/7.

I didn't think the machine was THIS crappy, but I guess so...

:-) It does sound like a radio's call sign, doesn't it?

'You are listening to kpbs, #1 station for rockin' with the golden oldies'.

115.2, what a beautiful number that is for me.

It sure is. He had me reset all sorts of things. Since then, I haven't lost my connection(knock on wood) once. When I used to get 7 kbps, I'd just disconnect and keep redialing until I hit 12. F@H is the first thing I check when I get up in the morning and the last thing before going to bed. I've been bitten by the F@H bug. :-)

I think I have the slowest computer of all. I don't even want to venture a guess of when the unit I'm working on will finish.

Blasted 2107 again, I'm convinced that project alone is the reason for the point slump all teams have experienced. Fortunately it returns 400 points when it's done, but I'm not convinced it shouldn't be higher.

My 2 GHz folding 2107 ~22 hours a day took I think 9 days. Thirteen days actually isn't that bad.

I have been getting at least a wu a day over the last few weeks, now, all my pcs are locked on the 2107 or 2106s, and I might have my first day with 0 wus. Earlier today, I looked up through our points and there were a lot of our top 100 folders with no points today. Things are starting to get grueling.

I wonder if this conversation is being repeated across all the other folding teams?

I've been given p1152 for the 7th time, now. Oh, well. it's 239 pts. My p2106 will be done in 2 days. I don't care if I get it again. I just don't want another Tinker unit on my Mac.
