We lived in a house that had lots of fancy paneling and cabinetry, stained glass, fireplaces etc. that none of the other houses on the block had. All of that improvement was because the work was done for free by construction companies. And that was because the previous owner was a city councilman.
Let's just say that because of the fact that he was "in" with the Essex County Democrats (he was once sanitation commissioner), my great-grandfather never had any labor problems (even when he hired blacks). :-)
