The Hobbit Hole XXVIII - Through shadows to the edge of night
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 02/24/2006 9:52:11 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Through shadows to the edge of night

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Tryin' to decide if I want to get the trip to town over with now, before we start...or just go later, when we're done. I think Cisco would be game either way...but maybe he'd be less likely to chew the rope if I got him a coupla toys to mess with while we work.

Need to get a good brush for him, too. I used the cat's one on him again this morning - it's basically just one that's for removing dead hair. Not sure it made any difference in his looks, but a lot of that loose stuff came off. And he really enjoyed the process...don't think we're gonna have fights over grooming. ;-)

"Yo soy Muzzy. Muzzy el grande!"

We had that one on video. It's VEY basic, but is interesting. We played the English videos once, so they kids could get the story, and after that, they watched in Spanish. They picked up some things, letters, colors, various and sundry vocab, computadora, for instance.

Corin, if you'd like it for Luke, I can send it to you . Do y'all still have a working Video player? I might even be able to drag up the book for it, though I can't guarantee what kind of shape it's in. We haven't used it for years. When you're done, you could send it on to Peanut Gallery for Elf-boy and Bitty Girl.

All this talk of Spanish has me talking like an ESL student.

I forget...does the feed store have a pretty good assortment of toys, or am I better off heading down to Petsmart?

The feed store has ~some~ probably has something you'd like, unless you need a particular 'busy bee' or something :~D

Petsmart has a lot more.

I'm thinking a rope bone might be good...our doys always liked those. And maybe a good chew bone and a Kong or something similar.

BTW...talked to Dad a bit ago. He got a laugh out of how Cisco first reacted to my hideous linoleum. ;-) Told him I wasn't sure if it was the fact that it was *linoleum* or the fact that it's just sooooo 70s...

You know, I think that's about the only time he's growled since he's been here.

When they come and stay here will they stay with you or get a hotel room? I do have two rollaway beds, one better than the other, if you need to borrow sleeping space.

So we come to it in the end, the great battle of our time...

Steve just forwarded an email to me from his advisor. Remember how he told Steve 2-3 weeks ago to submit the thesis, then schedule his defense? Well, Steve did it and requested the appointment for the defense from his committee.

We haven't heard a word back from any of them and apparently neither had Steve's advisor! So today (just now) Steve got this from the advisor (an excerpt):

My e-mail in-box has been strangely devoid of replies to this message.[Steve's request for an appointment.] I don't know what if anything has happened since, but acting on the assumption that the answer is nothing, I am taking matters in hand.

The board is set, and the pieces are moving. The advisor has lit a fire under the others on Steve's committee...so hopefully things will get going. The deadline to get all this done is April 21st and they're going to have to either get on the stick and pass him or not...which would be a dirty trick.

The advisor has redeemed himself greatly in my eyes...

I think they're hoping to stay with Ben and Anne...but I will likely have some folks stay down here a night or two. It would probably be a good idea for me to borrow one in a few weeks, just in case.

I'm thinking I'll also keep an eye out on Craigslist for free or very cheap twin beds. I want to turn that one room into a guest room eventually, once I get it straightened up.

Fair enough.... Let me know...

You could get yourself a double or a queen too, and use that twin for the guest room. - Now that you've got a few other bodies who might want room on the bed with you :~D

Sort of...we have an informal family reunion of sorts happening in the area in a few weeks. ;-) My brother and his wife and their [incredibly adorable] baby gal are the main focus, but I'm sure everyone will visit down here, too. My CA brother and his fiance are coming up from down there, and Dad, my two sisters, and one of my brothers are coming out from Vermont.

Gonna be great to see 'em all again!

Well...I guess I'm off somewhere. Petsmart is tempting on account of they have such a variety, and I can bring him in with me...though I'm not sure how he'll behave, so maybe that isn't a good idea.
