The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

. The JUDGE told her to beat the horse everytime it reared. IMO, this horse should have been dismissed....competition is not the place to train.
I wonder if this horse has this fellow's number, and has learned that he can get away with blue bloody murder in competition. Some horses do learn that (every horse I've ever ridden has tried it at some point) I know that this isn't what your getting at, but I don't think that someone should think twice about correcting their horse in the ring if it is needed. However, it should be a correction and then you should move on. What that fellow did was just senseless. There's a very interesting chapter on rearing in this new book that I'm reading, and I immediately thought of the CTR situation. The author wrote that she got venemous letters from her readers about beating or hitting a horse over the head to cure rearing, and how most of them felt that it was the only way to cure it.

Actually the dogs and Blade tease each other from their own side of the fence, it is like a game they always play. They are terriers and they think they are bigger and meaner than the horses.

Awesome pictures tonight. Just got home from my monthly trail riding club meeting. I mentioned I was looking for some land in the country. It seemed like everyone knew where some was. I got about 10 new leads.

After awhile Harley will get the hang of the P&R's. Tracey just talks to Sonny or E - "Take it easy, relax" and they drop like a rock. One vet told her, just keep talking, with one of Sonny's first rides :)

Harley has surprised me how well he has done at the P&R's, so far he has handled them like a seasoned competitor. Belle took awhile. She wasn't bad to move around alot, but she did a lot of watching, which keeps the rates up. But every year she got better and better, till her rates started coming in as good as any Arab:). I had several comment on that, "dang, you'd think she was an Arab". Nothing made me more proud:) Harley's counts have been good, no points lost, but I think they will get better as he adjusts, and gets in better shape. He was in pretty good shape but could be better, and he was dealing with a little soreness too, and that factors in. Once I get all those issues settled, I think he'll get as good as Belle.

I never count mine. Never have a clue what they are going to be till I get to a ride:)

At the ride the P&R's are taken 10 minutes after the horse comes in to a check point. A well conditioned horses rates will return to the normal range by then.

I think that's most people around here do. When they start to get winded or tired we slow them down or let them rest. Maybe they check during competitions though.

With the heat you have there, they may run higher...I don't know. From my understanding it's not necessaily what the counts are while they are working, it's how fast the rate comes down. I've been curious about what my horses rates are when they first get there, how much do they drop. If you don't agree with a reading you can ask for a recheck, but I've been told that with some horses the rate will go back up after awhile and if it's higher then the first reading your stuck with the second...I've never asked for a recheck. Rusty's counts were not good. He lost points everytime the one ride I took him. Now I know, his rates were high all the time, because of his particular condition. That's why he wouldn't make a good CTR horse, altho the vet said it wasn't a problem for him, it was just him.

It is hot. I don't go out to the stables til around 6. I usually take a walk on my breaks at work. Yesterday, I waited until 4 but still got all sweaty so that's out now.

I know what you mean. It's suppose to hit in the 90.s today, and we have lots of humidity. Very foggy this morning. So I have my horse massaged, stretched, and saddled, so I'm off to beat the heat:), see ya latter.

Good Morning

It's chilly with heavy rain here. We're under flood warning, but nothing too serious, streams and roads and whatnot. It's supposed to rain Saturday and Sunday too. We haven't had much sunshine in the past month!
