The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, the judge knew this horse was a problem. The judge told us about it at the award meeting, she said the horse was dangerous and was going kill someone if the rider didin't get control. The JUDGE told her to beat the horse everytime it reared. IMO, this horse should have been dismissed....competition is not the place to train. That's been my main problem with the whole affair from the start. The judges and ride officials all knew that there were 3 very unruly horses in the group. All three got to stay and all three placed.

I've had the incident with the passing thing happen a lot too, and it is irritating, to ask some one to pass and they take along time about letting you, when there is plenty of places to pull over. I think it's the people who know there horse is going to get up in the bridle when a horse passes them. They want to wait till they don't have to pull over and stop to let the pass take place. They want to do it where the trail is wide enough that they don't have to pull over and stop.

But yes I do think that poster was just showing off:)

The P&R's can present problems too for those horses that don't like a buddy horse to leave. If a rider pulls in next to you within a 3-5 minute window of when you pulled in you are suppose to wait till their P&R's are done. I don't have a problem with that. BUT:), I had one lady ask me to stay and I had a 9 minute wait. She was asking rather pathatically, in a begging manner, and with the workers around it kind of put me on the spot. I waited, but I didn't like it.

I asked Celia about it and she said I didn't have too, and no one would have thought anything about it. Next time I won't.

Gosh... it seems these issues are a training issue that could be judged, too, and be part of what separates the lesser trained trail horse from the winners.

I guess I'd try to keep my horse separated from the group as possible, face him the other way, something, to keep it from being an issue.

Situations like that though, where they've only spent a few minutes together, while the horse may turn around a bit when a horse leaves, it should be perfectly manageable. That happens alot, at places like the trailheads and favorite rest stop areas.

Yeah, they do make a mess under the nest. The nest here is right above our front door, over the porch:\ But I do enjoy them so I let them stay. Every year Mack threatens to tear it down. One year sparrows did, but the swallow rebuilt:)

We had a probelm with sparrows nesting on our porch so we put up nest boxes in the yard but they preferred the porch. I took two of my dogs stuffed toys and put them where they try to nest and that solved that problem! They are so funny, every year they come back and try again but see the doggie smelling stuffed toys stuffed in there and they squak and flap around then fly off. You can tell they are pissed. Whenever we have company over they always ask why I have stuffed toys on my porch supports and I tell them those are my scarecrows!

At obstacles if there is a line, I try to stay back as much as possible from the one in front of me, but close enough that the people behind don't start to gripe about move the line up:)

At the P&R's you have to stand as they put you. Most times space is limited, so the horses have to be lined up side by side facing the same direction with enough room between horses that the workers can get in and take the readings.

...At the ride, everytime, the rider in front of me forgot to stay...I waited on the rider behind me, as soon as he finished the judge told both of us to wait till the next rider, the problem horse, had finished...The horse did it just fine and we all went on...isn't that giving her an advantage...judge never told anyone to wait for me...this horse and rider placed above me....I'd like to know how many other times the judge stepped in and "helped" her...

Now THAT would really burn my @$$!!! And he// yes it was giving her an advantage, as evidenced by her placement! That ain't right!

Some horses at P&R's are distracted by the things going on around them, p eople walking past, horses coming in at one end and horse leaving at the other. They will do alot of looking around and sniffing the air. If it happens when their rates are being taken it can really up the counts, and you only get one shot at the readings. Several times I've had a horse that just as the worker was taking their readings would see something off somewhere and go to sniffing the air....it can be very frustrating. Belle finally learned, and Harley so far has been great about coming in, resting a back foot, dropping thier heads and resting. I've found the best thing to do is get them standing where/how they are suppose to, loosen the cinch a bit, sponge them off a little, give them a pat, then leave them alone. After about the first few minutes, I try not to touch them, just let them rest.

Some of the riders completly untack, and carry all kinds of thing from dustpans to cardboard to fan their horse with....feed them all kinds of things from carrots to poweder electrolyes,,,drives me nuts to stand by someone who is waving a dustpan up and down in thier horses face:). I'd like to know how much that really helps.

LOL...You know is all I've done is gripe about things that happened there, but I have to say, I had a great time, it was a fun ride, and all in all I think my horse was judged and scored fairly. There was nothing on my score cards that I didn't agree with.

But there did seem to be a comedy of errors take place at this ride, that I've never seen before.

I am going to try attaching a video clip of the horses one cool foggy morning kicking up their heels. Not sure if it will come through or not. I apologize if it doesn't.

I'll have to remember that tip:), but I sure like my little barn swallows, I don't want to scare them off, but the sparrows were even messier then the swallows.

At the time it happened I didn't even think about it. It wasn't till afterwards and all this stuff came to light that I remembered about that, and begin to think, "Hey, that wasn't fair:)". I get so focused on what I"M doing, that I don't notice alot of things thru out the ride, except of course the guy slugging his horse, but you would have had to be blind not to notice that.

Well, I gotta confess, that was Beaker's term. She posted it over the weekend in reference to some horse's behavior and I thought it was hysterical, but it fits the bill here.

I've always used ear bonnets in the summertime when the flies are bad. I've never known a horse to be bothered by them.
