The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I always have to get my bathing suits at Land's End because they're one of the few places that have 'Long Torso' sizes. I've got a long body and regular suits give me a wedgie. ;o)

Another good place to look is L.L. Bean

They have long torso suits at Dillard's but I can't wear them. I tried on a long torso suit in my size but the crotch was at my knees.

Sounds like the kind I need. I'm 5'7" but I've only got a 29" inseam, so most of my height is in my body. My sister is just the opposite. She's the same height but her legs are about 4 inches longer. So consequently, she has a very short waist. She could never tuck in a t-shirt with a picture printed on it because half of the picture would be be below the waistband of her pants. I used to like to kid her about that. ;o)

That is tooooo funny. My sister and I are opposites, too. I'm very short waisted and if I tuck in a shirt on a pair of high waisted jeans, I look like a total dork. I need jeans that sit just below the waist to look normal. I won't wear the really low waisted stuff, nobody wants to see my butt cleavage. As a matter of fact, I hate that style that people wear today, the low waisted pants with a short shirt. Unless you are ultra, ultra thin, everybody has a spare tire and it's not meant to be shown off, know what I mean? I was at six flags with my kids recently and there was a beautiful girl walking in front of us with a bikini top on with very low rise shorts. she was very thin but still had a spare tire. I made sure to point that out to my girls, just in case they had thoughts of wearing that style.

Hi Cindy. The memorial is June 24th. Are you gonna make it?
I think Elvis and Barbara are making the trip. They are planning on looking at old survey maps to locate an old homestead while they are in the area. Oh, remember when I was mad cause Barbara's spawn took her car away from her? Well, it turned out to be a good thing after all. They both went out and bought themselves two brand new cars.

Oh Gawd! Tell me about it! I hate that style too, and it's usually accompanied by a thong and an @$$ tattoo. Jeez! What are they thinking?

Good afternoon. Computer problems here this morning, but we're going now:)

I got Harley out and gave him a massage this morning, did his stretching exercises, and lunged him. He seems to be moving very well. I'll do that the next few days, then ride on Mon. morning. Really looking forward to it:)

Looks like the conversation over on the NATRC site is going to remain vague on abuse. Looks like Celia chimed in:).

Glad to hear Harley's doing good. He'll be expecting this kinda treatment all the time now if you're not careful. ;o)

I've been lurking in the NATRC4 site too and had kinda come to the same conclusion about the vagueness on abuse. I registered but made the mistake of using my real name when I joined because I didn't know that it would show it when you posted, even though you have a screen name, so I don't guess I'll be saying anything. I don't know if I can cancel that account or not. Do you?

I saw Celia :~).

One thing that was occuring to me about the argument was this idea that the rules had to remain up to the discretion of the judge because "what one person would consider abuse another person may not"

~slaps head~

That's WHY the rules could be clarified and everyone would be better off. If everyone would look at it differently, that's all the more reason to have a clear rule.

I don't know how to write such a rule, and you wouldn't want to make a CTR ride 'hands off' the way dog shows and horse shows are, where no correction is allowed, but something like "Correction of refusals or misbehaviors should be quick and proportionate to the misbehavior. Repeated striking of the horse is prohibited and the horse and rider will be disqualified."

I agree.

Any horse at any time can need correction. But if it is something that needs to be repeatedly applied, the horse is not ready for competition. "Correction" should not have to be in excess during a competition, IMHO:)

Celia kind of spilled the beans about what I saw, didn't she:)

Yeah - she didn't want to talk in vagaries :~D

I agree that it's about being competition worthy. Competition is not breaking and training.

I have no idea what if you can cancel. I think you can sign up under another name tho.

And any input you guys want to make, go for it.

I did get a response back from the lady who privately messaged me. She just basically apologized for what I saw, and said in 4 years she had never seen anything like that....

I'm hoping this kind of helps out Kirk. If the board figures out it is being discussed amongst the region, that it's "out", they may be more inclined to at least make some announcements at the next rides about the discussion and that people are watching.

He will probably do it anyway after not being ridden since November! I am sure he has forgotten what it felt like to carry my fat buttox! LOL.

Rare twin horses born in Graham

Scandalous Love romps with her twin foals – Scandalous Trouble, left, and Scandalous Surprise, right – in a pasture on a farm in Graham. After a rough start, the almost-month-old twins are doing fine.
Lying on a bed of hay, Scandalous Surprise put her head between the back legs of her brother, Scandalous Trouble, trying to use him as a pillow.

Her brother, also on his side, tried to kick her off his body, to no avail.

Laughter filled the stall of the Graham horse farm.

Scandalous Love, a 7-year-old Arabian, stood by her foals, unsuspecting of the humans in the small stall.

“You’d never see other foals do this,” said MiKael Caillier, who owns the farm and horses.

Siblings generally aren’t so close in the horse world. But there’s something else that’s unusual about Scandalous Surprise and Scandalous Trouble.

They are twins, and they are alive.

“This just doesn’t happen,” said Jack Gillette, a Graham veterinarian who helped deliver them on May 8.

In his 20-plus years in the business, Gillette said he had never personally come across twin foals. The only other time he saw it was at Colorado State University, 10 or 15 years ago.

Gillette said the chance of twin horses being born and surviving is anywhere from 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 500,000.

According to Caillier and Gillette, conception of twin foals – which is rare to begin with – normally results in the smaller fetus dying from lack of room in the uterus.

The dead fetus mummifies, and the twin eventually dies from toxins produced inside the mother.

The foals were born at Rising Rainbow Arabians, a five-acre farm Caillier and her husband, David, opened about 17 years ago. They have 26 horses, all Arabians.

The labor started the night of May 7. The final stage usually lasts only about 15 minutes.

But Scandalous Love endured two hours of it. During that time, the first foal’s leg protruded from his mother for more than an hour.

Caillier stuck her arm inside to see if she could grab any part of the foal’s body but could not. Hence, the foal’s name, Trouble.

As the water broke, the foal came through.

The second foal unexpectedly came out seven minutes later – hence her name, Surprise.

Very quickly, however, she was in trouble. Gillette had to perform CPR, which involved grabbing the foal’s back legs and shaking her like a towel. She resumed breathing.

The foals were weak and slightly “wind-swept,” or deformed from lack of room in the womb. It seemed a miracle that both survived.

Then the sleepless nights began. Caillier stayed in the stall for the next five days, getting the foals up every two hours, holding them up to their mother so they would feed.

“You couldn’t count on them to nurse on their own,” she said.

On day five, she had to take all three horses to a hospital in Snohomish because Scandalous Surprise’s belly button swelled up.

After four days in the hospital, Caillier spent another week in the stall with the foals.

“I probably got about 20 hours of sleep the first week after they were born,” she said.

Gillette said the foals now look like they will grow to full maturity, thanks to Caillier’s hard work.

“She’s a phenomenal owner,” he said. “Vets can do only so much.”

Caillier is being cautious with the foals, and she lets them gallop in the pasture only a few hours a day. For now, the siblings spend a lot of time sleeping on the bed of hay, legs tangled together.

Caillier looked at the animals dozing in the stall.

“You were supposed to be one foal, you silly,” she said.
