The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Ran across this in an old Western Horseman mag and figured that you guys would enjoy it.

A Guide to Ranching for the Politically Correct
by Rod Miller

When we first got into ranching
we really didn't expect
To see the business change so much
to become politically correct.

Cowboy lingo was simple then,
it was easy to communicate.
But now you can't say what you mean,
you're forced to obfuscate.

So you don't do irreparable damage,
to some critter's self esteem.
And to protect their tender feelings,
you must be gentle in the extreme.

Cowboy is the first of many words,
that we've been forced to shun.
It's sexist as well as sexually confused,
and has been replaced by cattleperson.

We no longer call them dogies,
those calves without a mother.
We merely say they're victims of,
a parental deficit disorder.

And cull is an insensitive way,
to describe a worn out cow.
Candidates for outplacement,
is what we call them now.

If you say you're raising fat steers,
their feelings you might addle.
So we don't talk about their weight,
They're fitness challenged cattle.

And sexually neutral bovine is
the term we've adopted here.
To avoid damaging the confidence
of what once was called a steer.

Heifer is another of those sexist terms
that crosses the PC line.
So we've dropped that one in favor of
pre-pubescent female bovine.

Then there's that label herd bull
that doesn't pass the test.
That job is now described as
serially monogamous fertilization specialist.

Being accused of racism is
another thing we dread.
So multicultural cattle is how we refer
to those who were once crossbred.

They may question their femininity
if you label cows as drys.
Calling them inactive lactators
is a change we feel is wise.

Sending an animal to the sick pen
is sure to affect it's composure.
A gentler way of describing it is as
the healing enclosure.

We say the cattle on our ranch are
preparing for a career in food services.
Because we fear a word like beef
will frighten and make them nervous.

Gentle, sensitive, caring, concerned-
those words define our place.
And the terms we use to describe our work
are chosen for charm and grace.

But I'd as soon go back to ranching
the way it used to be.
Instead of hosting this politically correct
ruminant residential facility.

Heh, I would think not. A 3yr old isn't good for normal blood pressure most any time. I knew you were keeping a 6yr old last night, who's the 3yr old?

Good morning everyone!

What a bum I am, slept in, didn't even wake to see my husband off for work.... didn't feed horses till after 8!

I did get my mail though, and uploaded this cute video of Truly's baby trying to take on an old chair.

Trulys colt.ASF

Heh... Babies are so funny investigating the world for the first time. Where was Truly? Wherever she was she didn't seem to be too alarmed about where the baby was.

She was standing right there having her feet trimmed. I had haltered them both and brought them out of the pasture and sprayed them for ticks, then I went to work on Truly's feet while Little Sassy Butt there investigated everything in my in-law's back yard. The old chair was one that was on it's way to the burn pile but just hadn't made it out that far yet. It had been out on the carport for quite a while, serving as a cat bed but my MIL finally got tired of looking at it and dragged it out in the yard. She stepped in that fire ant bed in the process, so that's why there's a bottle of burnt motor oil turned upside down on top of it. I guess you could call that Southern Redneck Pest Control. LOL! Anyways, the little bugger just had to go mess with it until I ran him off. He kept on coming over and nosing around on my back while I was bent over rasping and would've reared up on my back if I hadn't reached back and bumped him on the nose with the hoof brush a couple of times. He's going to be a hoot to watch grow up, but he's going to have an appointment to visit Dr. Knife very soon. ;o)

"Antbed" is what you said? :~D I was about to watch it again.... I couldn't figure out what it was he was into :~D

He's just still cautious and unsteady now... by next week you could get a video of him climbing up on that chair and flyin' off it :~D

It must be true for that age. Darcy is also 6 and is the same way, except she claims to be allergic to soap and tooth paste also.

Weeell, you may sound just like her to folks up there, but to folks down here, you'd still sound like a northerner. I have a co-worker who is originally from Chicago and has lived down here for about 30 years. Long story short, she met and married a local guy while they were both in the Peace Corps on some South Pacific island back in the '70's. {we delight in giving her a hard time about that} When she goes back up there to visit her family, they all think she sounds like a Southern Redneck, but to anybody around here, she still sounds like "She ain't from around these parts". ;o)

I heard on GMA this morning that y'all were getting some nice sunny weather today. You gonna try to get in a ride this weekend?

Yes - we're hoping to go tomorrow... hopefully without missing the Kentucky Derby... still haven't looked to see when that's on.

I need to find out, I like to put up the live thread for it. :~D

I took some screencaps of your video... the "best of chair killer" for those that can't watch the video.

LOL! Those are good! He's a funny little booger. That chair seemed to hold a special facination for him. He was up and down on it several times before I got the video camera out. He also found an old piece of plastic sheeting in the floor of that old cattle trailer that was sitting there and proceeded to get it in his mouth and chew on it. My in-law's back yard holds a wealth of junk for him to investigate.
