The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I would like to carry mine behind me but that is probably too much weight.

At 17 pounds I bet it's got a bunch of stuff you don't really need on a trail ride... I don't carry my purse, keys (except the truck keys) money, wallet, etc.

Yeah, I was just thinking I could strip it down or better yet buy another just for riding. I don't need the make up and medicine cab, the calendar, clip board, The purse, the notebook, the WW stuff, the 20 dollars in change. the umbrella, the tape recorder, a dozen pens. I would keep my camera, a small Bible, my glasses, my knife and my cell phone though.

LOL, don't forget you need to take a halter and lead rope with you too:)

Camera and cell phone either go in the front in a small bag, or in my shirt pocket..., and ecurbh carries a few things with him too. He'll have the GPS. We've been looking for a horn bag for ecurbh that's good for the GPS unit.

Yep. Can't forget those but she is already used to them. I keep the halter on and usually just coil up the lead rope.

I was looking at a leg strap. That might be irritating though. I usually just hook the camera around the horn .

That would be a great idea. A double incentive then to lose weight and add to your backpack :)

ROTFLMAO - Your backpack sound like my bookbag. I could live out of it with no problem.

This is the bag I've used for years. I found it at Walmart. It's not a fanny pack, the strap was way too long to go around an waist securely. I really don't know what this bag was intended for, I doubled the strap and duck taped it so it would be small enough for to stay on me. The back compartment can hold 2 20 ounce bottles of water. I can't zip it with 2 in there but the flap I'm holding folds over the top and velcros down. That leaves the front compartment for my camera and CTR map. I keep my knife in my pocket. I usually tie my lead rope behind the seat of the saddle and leave the halter on under the bridle. I'd like to get a halter/bridle combo, but haven't had the money so far:) In hot summer I also have one of those single insulated water bottle bags that I can tie to the rigging of my saddle, so that gives me 60 ounces of water. And I tie my sponge with long string on to the side of the breast collar.

And it's well worn :~D

Even with your shiny new saddle, you won't look like a greenhorn with a bag like that :~D

We are suppose to get some later this evening. This afternoon a bad storm went thru Tulsa. I guess they got about an inch of rain in an hour and high winds. Bixby got the wind, but I don't think they got any rain. Some trees and fences came down. I think here at my house the wind must have blown pretty good, from the looks of some of the stuff we had in the yard. I was at Charlies house when it went thru, at his house they got nothing, not even the wind.

LOL, leave it to you to point that out:)

I've looked and looked for another similar to this one. A real fanny pack just really isn't big enough. I hang on to this hoping something better might turn up:)

This is to remind me to post something about Maxpedtion gear, which has all sizes of mil-spec fanny packs, backpacks, and everything in between. The Hobbit Hole does MOLLE gear, too. :)

Well, hopefully you'll get your rain, but without the winds.
