This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated :) I love that knife of Hair's.
I've always worn a shoulder holster when I've packed it on my person... I've never worn hip holsters riding, mostly because I don't wear a belt, or even pants with beltloops (I do wear pants, just not pants with beltloops, lol)
I also think the gun would be most protected in a shoulder holster if I were to get tossed. I think a hip holster would just mean one more place I'd have a bruise. :~D
Congratulations for your hubby... hope he finds something he wants to do now.
Thanks. Looking forward to it.
And thanks winmag, for all you do :~D
Please support our Hobbit Hole Pocket knives for the troops project.
FR thread here: Help us support our troops! [Knives for Soldiers] Update: 1,000 shipped to date and counting!
Sacrilege!. The Hobbit Hole has flashlights the size of the mini-maglite that use the new high-power LEDs and CR123 batteries. A two-cell model puts out more light than the old 5-D-cell cop lights. We'll be giving some away to Marines to use at their car checkpoints. 100 hours on a set of batteries, and 10,000 hour LED life. Technology marches on!
Seriesly, if there's anything the Hobbit Hole gives out to troops that could be used here (and I can think of a lot of stuff), just ask. We get these goodies at rock-bottom prices, and you can have them for that cost. Donations always welcome, but not required.
You all were chatty today.
I spent the day with JP at his house today. Just got finished with evening chores and finally get to catch up.
I haven't read every thing close, but saw your first aid kit. I didn't know you could get banimine in a paste. I'm going to get some.
Do you plan on carrying that with you when you ride, or just have it in your trailer?
Becky
On my CTR rides we are suppose to have a pocket knife with us. One time at one of the observations points we had to get it out and cut some round bale baling twine. Mine did, but several riders got marked off because their knife was so dull:). It was a good point, I hadn't thought about what good would a dull knife be if you really needed one.
The funny thing those 3-4 years that I competed so heavy I just got in the habit of carrying a pocket knife with me all the time. It was funny how often I had to get it out and use it, and the comments that came up when a woman was the only one in a big group who even had a knife:)
I'd like to find a really really nice combo, knife, wire cutters only. I've found the ones that have all those other tools but that gets bulky in your pocket. But wire cutters would be easier to use then a knife to cut vines and stuff that can get around the horses feet.
Becky
What is the weight limit you would have on filled saddle bags?
You have a light that's better than that for the size? :~D
I've evaluated a small wire cutter, about the size of a min-maglite. It can cut barb wire, electrical, chain link fence, aircraft cable, etc. Its unique design gives it tremendous leverage in a tiny size. I'll throw in pictures of it, too.
It's not a combo tool, but it still keeps the weight and bulk down. This might also be a good place to talk about Israeli bandages, QuikClot, vacuum-packed survival gear, and safety carabiners.
Just whap me if the actual horse-talk gets drowned out.
Would it cut the clinches off horse shoe nails?
There really isn't a weight limit for trail riding. What ever your horse is comfortable with. I can't remember, do you have the light cordura saddles or regular leather western saddle? The synthetic ones weigh about 20lbs give or take and the leather ones sometimes run up to 40lbs, I think that's about what my Billy Cook is.I wouldn't want to add another 40-50 lbs of weight but then when I think about it, Bob weighs 100 lbs more than I do, and the same horse will carry both of us equally well. Well, I'm not sure Dusty is thrilled with carrying his weight but she doesn't have a problem with it :)
I'd like to see the wire cutters, that's something I would like to have the riders carry - lots of old barbed wire around here.
Well those sound like very very nice wire cutters:). If they were small enough for a pocket I guess it wouldn't matter if it was a combo with the knife or not.
I don't like saddle bags, they can make a horse sore in the loins if they aren't balanced properly or tied down securely enough. And I don't like horn bags, because they get in my way. So I land up carrying everything in my pockets or a small bag I can put around my waist.
Becky
My western is 18 pds. My husband doesn't liie his and is giving it to me also. About 32lbs. I lost 2.6 last week so maybe I should use that as my guide. The more I lose the more I can carry:') I weighed my back pack . It's 17 lbs right now. I usually start out with 2 bottles of water that aren't in there right though.
The lanyard might be a good idea, too.
I think total weight is what's important, and I'm already on the heavy side for Bay... so far, I haven't really added any significant weight to the bag with my first aid kit... only weight will be my water bottles and a lunch or some candy bars. Potentially my airweight .38.
That's nice. Mine kind of looks like that but it's metal and runs of AAs.
