The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes - We have backpacks with emergency first aid, etc. in all the vehicles and they have duct tape in them. I have not put together ones for the saddlebags (which really needs to be done but I can't get Bob or Tracey to carry anything but water and energy bars).

Anyway, the ones in the vehicles, I just took a piece of cardboard and wrapped about 24" of duct tape around it. It's very light and quite small.

Well, we have a rechargeable that is about the size of the original mag light. The little dinky ones might be too small to really do any good as a flashlight.

When I was a kid, my dad attached leather saddle bags and saddle rolls to all the saddles - it was a permenent thing, you rode with it or you died type of deal. They weren't very heavy really, but attached to the saddle was always matches, a hoof pick and hoof knife, a rope, a blanket - I can't remember what else but probably a ground tarp around the blanket.

I carry mine from the car to the house and just take out a clutch purse when I don't want to lug it around.

It depends. I have a very small one that I can adjust beam. It was pricy but it lights up real good. It's no flood light though:')

I like that idea because you always have your tools with you and the horse is used to it.

During competition, I could understand that... there's lots of other riders who'll be coming through, there's checkpoints now and then, and there are sweep riders. But I want to carry a few things when we go out on rides because it's not all that easy to get back out and get a trailer in. We'll have our GPS this year, but GPS, like cell phone coverage out there, is not 100%. I'm wanting a little first aid to help us get back to the trailer if a horse gets a cut or a sprain, or something like when Bay fell on his knees... he walked out just fine, but I knew we had to hurry because those knees were gonna swell like melons by evening.

Yep - if it's attached well and light enough, it's not a problem at all for trail riding.

And you are right - They do that around here too, not just competition. Dumb to my way of thinking but I'd have made a good boy scout :) Be prepared.

They aren't really without supplies and tools. They know where they are and where you are:')

Well, the last load of laundry is in the washer, the show clothes are all mended and ironed, and I can't pay the bills until the horse shoer leaves so I know how much that check is for. Seems I've worked harder at home today than I would have if I'd have gone into work.

How are you doing? What is this about retirement?

My husband had his first full day of retirement today. He sold his shop and handed over the keys yesterday. When he woke up it was strange, he didn't have to be anywhere. I don't know how he really feels about it. It will be strange, he's one of those guys that has to be doing something every minute of the day.

I've been riding almost every day but as Miss Targets will agree, it's a cold spell coming on and the ground is kind of muddy. I hate riding in the arena !! Hope it warms up so I can go back to the cabin and explore.

I thought he was already retired. Give him in a high five and tell him I said to enjoy life. He can still stay busy , putting that energy to stuff he has wanted to do but hasn't had the time.

I'm better, thanks. It's hard to wade thru that thread. You wonder how much is BS. Are the haves as well off as they say and are the have nots really without. Lot's of millionaireslol I'm either quiting or going part time when I get my certification. I figure I can break even with teaching 10 students 2 evenings a week. I'll have a lot of paper work but I can do that here on my own schedule which is what I need.

It was a gift from our hobbit hole knife man, 300winmag.

A knife for every occasion. What a great topic, knives, horses, and survival gear.

I'll have to throw in some pictures of pocket survival and signal kits, something else that should be in every saddlebag. And I still need to do a review of a handgun holster that's safe and sensible for rider or hiker.

You learn a lot, shopping for knives and gadgets for the troops. 1294 sharps to date, and no end in sight.
