The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

So, unless it's job or hobby related the older we get the more exposure time. I haven't even touched on the horse stuff. Salves, creams, medicines, fly sprays............

Oh, you're on penicillin? I wasn't talking about you, just in general. I guess you aren't allergic to it then if you're still alive and kickin'. ;o)

Good stuff if you can take it and haven't built up a resistance. I'm on my 2nd day and the swelling going down.

Yeah, you got a point there. The same thing goes for soda cans. There's no way to open one without the little pop-top thing going down in the drink. I hardly ever wash those unless they're visibly dirty, but I know I should.

Sounds pretty good then. I just don't think doctors prescribe it much any more since there's so many other choices out there. I don't remember the last time I took any penicillin.

I've been lucky I guess and have never had to have much dental work done. Knock on wood!

What do you think of this for a compact horse and rider first aid kit... thinking this will go in my saddle bag and just stay there. It's got some items I stole from a larger first aid kit, like gauze, sterile wipes and a cold compress, plus a new roll of vet wrap, the cute little roll of charmin (which I'm thinking is a nice gauze in a pinch, different from the TP I carry for ordinary use) some ibuprofen, large bandaids (not gonna bother with the small ones) and a 4-dose tube of banamine, which the vet recommended as both an anti-inflammatory and an aid for colic or something like that.

I want to add a tube of Neosporin or Iodine based topical... anything else I should have?

Looks good to me. All I could think to add might me a small pair of scissors, some tape and maybe some sun screen . Maybe tweezers.

Oh - yeah - I also carry a Swiss Army Equestrian, that has a large knife and a hoof pick. That has tweezers.

Got a picture of that knife?

Sure! Big knife blade on the left, hoof pic on the right. I put a pen in there just for scale... it's a large pocketknife, not like the little ones we think of when thinking swiss army knife.

It was a gift from our hobbit hole knife man, 300winmag.

The 1st Aid kit sounds pretty inclusive to me. The Swiss Army Equestrian knife sounds pretty cool too. I didn't know they made those, but I should have. They make everything else! I think you've got everything covered, except for maybe some Sting Kill or something like that for bee stings. We've got yellow jackets around here and I've carried those before for them. They're little plastic coated glass vials with a cotton tip and you squeeze them to bust the glass and release the liquid into the tip. They work pretty good to ease the pain. Some Benadryl caplets would be good too, for allergic reactions in people.

Benadryl is a really good tip. I just added that. For bee stings or an unfortunate choice in places to potty (poison oak), or even regular allergy attacks ecurbh has been known to have in particular bloom seasons. Haven't heard of the Sting Kill stuff... Drug store?

Yeah a drugstore ought to have them. I think mine came from Wal-Mart. I think it comes on little cardboard cards, maybe 3 or 4 to a card. They're about as big around as a pencil and maybe an inch or so long and have green liquid in them. There's some other stuff I've used when I couldn't find that that was in a small yellow squeeze bottle about 2 inches long and you just put a drop or two on the sting.
