This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Bob is 6'2" and 230lbs, so he makes a lot of horses look real small, but Dusty is small and she was the perfect size for me. Her dam wasn't large, 15.1 although her sire was (he was 16H) but I think her growth was stunted a little. We didn't think she would survive when she was born, very small and skin and bones.
Her heart is 16H though and she's probably the smartest horse I've ever owned. She gets bored easily and the past two-three years of being a lesson horse has about driven her up a wall. She's the one that we have to be very careful with her gates. If she can get out, she will let everyone else out too.
We have two "patience poles". They are poles purchased from the electric company and cut down. They are about 4' in the ground and about 10' above ground. Then old tires are dropped over them all the way up. Bob ties the horses to one of the tires, which will turn so they don't get wrapped around the pole but they can fight it all day and get nowhere. Any horses that we have that are bad about standing tied do time on the patience pole.
I didn't know this, I am so sorry that happened. What a trumatic event for you and heartbreaking.
One more month to go huh? That is just so cool.
Thanks. I'll write this post number down so that when I down at Jenny's we can watch it. She liked seeing them too:)
Well all the riding is done for the day. I got Celia to take a few pictures, and I took some of Jenny riding Dot in the arena. She (Dot) seemed a bit stiff at the start. We think it's because she didn't have shoes and is tender. But once she got going she was good.
Pictures loading.

Ah - good - I'm headed out to mow a bit, but I'll be back in to check :~D
I'm very regular about making my horses stand tied. Even horses that are very good, it's a good thing to do with them. Harley almost always stands saddled for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour before I ride. And lots of times he stands there for awhile after I get back.
It's such a simple thing to do but the benefits are huge, IMO:)

Here I am a little further down the hill.
Coming up a hill.
Jenny warming Dot up.
Duchess here is Jenny doing some barrel work:) Jenny did some refresher work on the barrels, never got out of a trot. This picture she could have even just been at a walk I don't remember, but the horse was bending around the barrel real nice.
She is useing the bit I bought while at the clinic last year. Story behind it. She has always used the same bit I was using on Harley, the correction bit. Well I think I told you that Charlie took that bit away from me because he said it was wore smooth out. The edges of where the bit was jointed was so wore that they were sharp. He told Jenny to check hers and I think it was worse then mine. Both Jenny and I never even thought about a bit wearing out, yikes, poor horses. But even tho this bit looks like there is alot to it, it's really a pretty easy bit, and Jenny really like the way the horse gave to it.

If it makes you feel any better, Frog, I think that your accent is a hoot! I love it. :-) Mine is kind of generic and ugly at the same time, because it's a Boston accent. Park is "Pahk" Car is "Cah" Beer is "Beeah" I do try to control it, but when I get tired, it comes out blazin' :-p
Terrific pictures :~D Great shot coming up the hill :~D
I don't know about you, but I'd rather go up a long steep hill than down one. Going downhill has never been real comfortable, I always feel like we're topheavy. When I started getting afraid of big jumps it was the long downhill side that scared me, never the takeoff side.
What great pictures. And it's so green there now after all the dry. The horses look great. Dusty wants to trot too close to the barrell in her turn, so that the rider's foot is hitting the barrel.
Try putting tires around the barrel to keep them off of it, and use lots of inside leg.
Becky
Hey. She looks like me ! :')
I also don't have an accent lol
Sorry to hear you are still having trouble. I wonder what you are allergic to?
UUMMMMM, 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of another for me. At a CTR one time an observation was going up a very steep hill and at the top there were several logs to step over. 2 riders before my turn a horse gased out at the top trying to step over one of the logs, and came back down the hill, mostly backwards. It was very scary, the rider came off about 1/2 way down. After that they called the observation off. I was very glad. Even before the wreck I was trying to decide if I was going to do it or not. i was on Belle, and now I would say she wouldn't have any trouble, but then i was still a very nervous rider.
The horse and rider that didn't make it were from TX, and she said they didn't even have small hills to work on. The horse just wasn't use to them at all. Belle was. it was still a scary thing, and I still worry now going up long steep climbs:)

Do the judges ride the trails out first?
