The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I didn't know either that he shouldn't have rasped the overhang of the toe off. What's the purpose of that?

It took me a minute to find it, but here's what they say about it...

When finishing the foot, only remove the flares that are obvious from the mid portion of the hoof wall down. Undercut any remaining hoof left over the shoe. DO NOT over rasp the dorsal wall to meet the shoe. This can weaken the integrity of the wall if it is taken beyond just distortion removal...

So what they're saying is that you might rasp off an obvious toe flare by thinning the hoof wall down to be as thick as the hoof wall on the rest of the foot, but don't thin it all the way back even with the shoe. You'll get the hoof wall too thin at the toe. You're supposed to undercut the overhanging toe to make it the same angle as the toe rocker on the shoe, like this...

And thinking back on it, I don't think my guy THINNED the hoof wall of Bob's toe, I think he just rasped it off straignt up and down to be even with the shoe. I wanted to watch him more while he was working, but unfortunately I was having to hold Bob still and couldn't do it. Maybe I'll get to watch better on Thursday, but I ain't counting on it. :~/

I gotta go head for the barn. See y'all tomorrow...

I hose him almost every time before a ride, before we load in the trailer... by the time we get there, he's dry. :~D

He's all saddled now, and I'm headed out to see if I can get my leg over him after all this time.

Oh - and something has happened to my cinch over the winter... it barely fits around him ;~D

Just had to watch the videos before I left. Good Job! Ol' Bay Man really looks like he's feeling good. MUCH better then in his lame video last week. He was DEFINATELY favoring that right front foot in those. The video stills sure are handy. It really helps in gait analysis. I've GOT to get that package. I agree that he looks like he's landing heel first now.

Ok, I'm really worrying now.

Since I believed him about not putting them on the back, I'm afraid I'm in trouble again. I think what I've done, is once again speed up his front feet and slow his back ones down.??? If what the vet told me about their stride is right, he could very easily land up with a sore back again.

Dam, dam, dam, why can't I just make people I pay do what I want them too....

Okay, I just talked to Chris. I know this isn't what you are saying, but I'm going to go with this at least for now and see what happens. He said, the shoes were designed for the front feet. He has never put them on the back. He did move the shoe on the back foot back and block the toe good.

He said ride him good for a few days, if he comes up sore he'll come back and we'll do something....:)

Well, I got up! He didn't even grunt or groan when I got on. I had intended to be lighter for him this year than I was last, but that didn't happen. ~sigh~

Oh well. Bay moved out real well just walking... And I'm glad to have done it. Would like to do that a few more times on just short walks to get him ready to go on a real a trail ride. I think a slow build up is better for him than pushing it would be certainly.

His bridle path has never been that long... Whos cares for this horse? ;~D Clipping tomorrow :~D

Found another tree my woodpecker's been going after...

Here's my entourage...

My entourage did not always follow politely however ;~D

Here's quite a feat, for Bay, anyway, I led him around the back of the barn to get to the back forty, where he had to maneuver ~under~ a big scary tarp I have as a lean-to off the barn...

This was the first ride in the Hackamore too... I think he'll do just fine in it. It's got a lot of woah, just have to be a little gentle with it.

Thought I'd show you ladies the status of a fern in the wild here... The old fronds are laying flat and will turn brown and the new ones are just tall curls still. Are yours still hangin' on? Looking hopeful? Or not?

Hi everyone.
I just got back from the cabin and had a great experience with Waylon. We rode every day and it was great. Today when we took our morning ride, I went down a trail I hadn't been on before and encountered a huge mud puddle (it looked more like a ditch) Waylon didn't want to go through it and I kind of helped him along....well he was right. His hind end sunk into the mud like quicksand, he righted himself and his front left leg then sunk. We didn't go down though. Being the mountain horse he is supposed to be he ran up the side of this huge hill, through the trees etc. and got us to the top. He sure took care of us.
I can't wait to go back. We will be spending the week after Mem. Day down there....should be great.
Weather was great (mid to high 60's and sunny) and I'm loving all this trail riding.

My fern is still doing good. I don't think there will be a lot of fronds this year, but the ones that are there are growing. Even the half I thought was dieing has new curls starting to show just above ground.

It's been so hot here, that I've been watering it every day...can you over water them?

I'm just thrilled that it will stay green all winter. I didn't know that.

Becky
