Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - splenetic

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

splenetic \splih-NET-ik\ adjective

marked by bad temper, malevolence, or spite

Example sentence:

Phil's review of the book was written with a harsh, splenetic tone that did little to conceal his preexisting grudge against the author.

Did you know?
In early Western physiology, a person's physical qualities and mental disposition were believed to be determined by the proportion of four bodily humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. The last of these, associated with feelings of intense sadness, was believed to be secreted by the spleen. This now-discredited association explains how, in the mid-16th century, use of "splenetic" (deriving from the Late Latin "spleneticus" and the Latin "splen," meaning "spleen") came to mean "given to melancholy" as well as "of or relating to the spleen." In later years, the meaning of "splenetic" shifted to refer more to feelings of ill humor or malevolence, and eventually the "melancholy" sense fell out of use.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

If they vote the clown in, then they deserve even more than they have already suffered.

Cute entry from an article about lousy movie titles:

Something Wicked this Way Comes (named by Yoda this movie title was)

Actually, it was a Ray Bradbury book title. I hadn't realized they made a movie of it.

I am assuming the senator's bro is another democrat? The dems are washing their hands of Nagin? Pass the popcorn on over.

Thank you. The book was entertaining, and didn't hit you over the head with Bradbury's artiness, thank goodness.

Canada 0 Russia 0 after 12 minutes of the second. One of our sports networks has a running score window that updates after every minute of play or after each goal. I hate to miss a Canada-Russia game, they're usually pretty darn good, but it's a workday.

Bah. The sports network's internet window updates every minute of real time, not playing time. Old age strikes again. Still 0-0 after two periods.

Mitch, brother of Mary Landrieu, son of Moon Landreiu, ya he's a Dimocrat.

In Louisiana everyone runs against everyone in November. IF no one gets 50% the top two run off in December.

Sorry Arghy. Canada lost. It was a really exciting game. I hope you recorded it. They looked exhausted by the beginning of the third period and it seemed like Iginla and little St.Louis were the only ones who really wanted the win. At least your team didn't humiliate themselves over there like Team USA.

Canada-Russia games usually are pretty darn good. I didn't tape it.

Buncha overpaid chokers. I was interested to see Ovechkin got the important goal for Russia. Next time, we're going to put our women in the men's uniforms and have them play the other countries' men, we'll get better results. :^)

Too bad about Team USA. Of them, I only saw part of the third period last night, they made it interesting. I was sorry they couldn't tie it up.

The Finns and the Swedes are really good this year. We only have one of our players in that mix. Kimmo Timonen, defenseman for Finland. I hope he doesn't get hurt too.
