When I was a teenager, one of my classmates was in an otherwise minor fender-bender where a shard of glass sliced off his nose. The troopers found it, wrapped it in a damp cloth and ice, and the ER sewed it back on. Except for a certain lumpiness, the operation took, and he kept his nose. This was the first time ( circa 1962 ) I'd ever heard of such a thing.
One might say..."She missed it by a nose"
