(Queens-WABC, February 15, 2006) - The search continues for an award winning dog featured at this week's Westminster Dog Show. The $150,000 dog is missing in Queens.
This whippet named "Vivy" got loose at Kennedy Airport about noon. She was being loaded on to a Delta Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles when she reportedly got out of her crate and took off.
She is believed to be in the airport's surrounding area, which covers nearly five thousand acres.
The owner is now making a desperate plea for her prized dog's return.

Oh no! This is the dog I admired simply for the fact that the "handler" ONLY guided the dog, didn't try to hide anything. Not only was she on loose lead when trotting, but the dog had a LOOSE collar in the show! That's showing the actual dog, not some fake enhanced 1.
I pray she comes back. It's good when a dog can be a winner showing her actual attributes, not an illusion created by the human.
"Award of merit"? She was obviously BOB and I think she managed Group 4.
Luckily it has been in the 50's in the daytime in NYC for the last two days. And since dogs can deal with no food for many days but must have water, the leftover snow can help.
Is this Rescue and Search Command Headquarters? If so, it looks to be in good "paws."
Thanks for the ping...I heard about this on the news this morning, and was saddened to hear that a doggie got loose, and is missing...sure hope that they are successful in finding the dog...
Phone home quick, they're looking for you.
Nope, Best of Breed in Whippets went to Ch Eclipse Envy O Sportingfield, and Ch Sporting Field's Rock On JC (the JC at the end is a coursing title) was Best of Opposite Sex.
The Awards of Merit went to Ch Karasar's Essence and to "Vivie", Ch Bohem C'est La Vie.

Poor beastie, I sure hope she's found. She's got to be freezing.
It's disconcerting that I have a $150,000 price on my head.
Best in Show went to Rufus, a colored bull terrier with an egg-shaped head.
Damn.
We are having dreadful weather today in the Great Lakes area and it's heading toward NY. We don't want to see that poor baby lost in the snow.
A local talk show host here said he once owned a whippet cross. He said that if whippet doesn't want to be caught, they will never catch him.
I heard from a person in Southern California who said it's been all over the news there about the lost whippet. She also said the whippet had a coat on which will help against the cold. Sure wish they would find him.
They've called off the search now. Poor little girl. The jacket may have bought her some time, but sighthounds really aren't made for being outside long in any kind of weather extreme. I don't hold out too much hope.
Aren't Whippets a product of England? I don't think NY is much worse than England.
I hope they set up traps around the region to try and catch her. BWI did that here back in the Summer(?) or so when a woman moving from here to AZ found out her family's dog had escaped from the cargo handlers. In about a week, they caught the dog and he went to his new home in AZ.
Wow, does the BOB and the Vivie have the same handler? Cuz that pix of the dog w/the very loose collar and lead looks the same lead set-up that was in the Group ring.
Whippets and greyhounds were bred to be hunting and racing dogs that run very fast. As such, they have very little body fat and very fine hair. Because of this, they were historically kept kenneled when not being used for hunting, racing or lure coursing. Compare this to other northern dogs who were bred to be outside, for instance collies.
If you purchase or adopt a sighthound such as a whippet or greyhound, you generally have to sign an agreement that the dog will live indoors. They just don't do well in extremes of weather, hot or cold.
A question was asked that I don't know the answer to. Could a scent seeking dog (bloodhound for instance) be brought in to find the whippet?
I've never seen such a thing (and I've been around dog shows since 1968). I did watch the video. The dogs are in catalog order. The first dog is armband #5, Vivie is armband #6, so logically she's the next dog in. She was gaited on a loose lead.
BTW, I have a new baby German Shepherd. Right now her ears are doing some really amazing things. I took her to my Vet, whose comment was, "this is not a German shepherd, this is a Labrador!" The Vet's seen some really shy, freaky shepherds, and mine has yet to meet a person she can't charm off their feet. Here she is:
Here's a post from a dog show list, concerning the search for the Whippet (the poster is a Whippet breeder):
"The search is still very much on. The Police are not involved anymore, but
the Airport Security Police and the owners are still involved.
Bo, Jil and Paul are not leaving without her.......traps are being placed and
a Bloodhound will hopefully tracking her tomorrow."
