Is Your Comcast Internet Connection Sloooooow?
Self | February 15, 2006 | PJ-Comix

Posted on 02/15/2006 4:49:12 PM PST by PJ-Comix

Until recently, my biggest problem with Comcast internet was being frequently disconnected. However, I am now noticing that even when you are connected, Comcast often has painfully slooooooow speed. Anybody else have these connections.

This slow speed problem is keeping me from posting a DUmmie FUnnies edition this evening.

If you know your rated speed you can compare it.

Typically most cable connections fall in the 3000/384, 4000/512 range.

It's slow but not so much here at FR as it is on other sites.

It's funny you should mention that.

I just signed up for Comcast about a month ago, and initially, I was thrilled. Then, I started noticing that things seemed to be slowing down to DSL speed, and then, I was getting these DOS popups checking my config files.

On the plus side, when I've called customer service, I've actually spoken to a human being who speaks English within minutes, but they keep trying to walk me through my cable modem connection, which is fine.

In conclusion, I'm stumped too.

I get 132K/s (1056 Kbps)

I have Comcast (Connecticut) had it's been very reliable.
The one time that I had a problem like this was when I had the cable split off too many times.

I bought a cable modem compatible distribution amplifier that has worked very well.

The other problem that you may be having is just that too many people in your neighborhood are FReepers and spend too much time reading DUmmie FUnnies. With cable modems, your bandwidth is shared with your neighborhood.

However, most of the time, when I hear, "My Internet is slow and unreliable", I think "SpyWare".

Thanks for the links. I'm getting 7036 kbps download and 352 kbps upload. What's pathetic is I have no idea whether that's good or bad.

Generally, anything 3000/384 and higher is "good"

I don't use Comcast. But, a while back my internet connection was terrible. The problem was my router was going bad. I replaced it and the problem went away. That's probably not your problem, but maybe it is something other than Comcast.

To put it in perspective

Fastest dialup 56/56
ISDN 128/128
Most DSLs 1500/1500
T1 1500/1500
T3 42000/42000
Most cable 3000/384
or 4000/512

I'm getting 5628dl/350ul in da 'Burgh. I was slower earlier, but seem to be speeding back up to normal.

It seems the speeds vary depending on which server you connect to. NY gives me 6060/348, DAL is 5984/352, ATL is only 4841/346.

Agreed. 1000 vs 2000 vs 6000 is still very usable.

If PJ can't post, something else may be wrong.

Occasionally when I have a problem with Comcast, I disconnect the cable modem for a few minutes then plug it back in. It seems to reset or something. Don't know if that helps any, but it seems to work for me.

The math goes something like this...I think:

1024 (1k) x 7036 (kbps) = 7,204,864 bits

7,204,864 / 8 bits (1 byte) = 900,608 bytes of download speed.

That's good. :)
