Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.

While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

Your running Quark and Photoshop on a G3? That just has to be abusive just to watch.

Speaking as a winders geek, I need a hardware upgrade everytime I turn around. I've built my own systems for years and don't even bother with covers on my systems anymore. More memory, new video card, bigger hard drives as often as I can afford it.

Just so the solitare cards keep cascading down quickly.

Maybe you can get one of the new MacTel MacMinis that will be out soon. They are going to be cheap enough.

I'm way past due for a new machine. Every time I've about made up my mind, something new (Intel Mac) pops up. One of these days soon, I'm going to pull the trigger. My wife says just get something that has lots of expansion capabilities, even if it costs more to begin with.

I need to be running InDesign, too, and be able to have all my graphics apps open at the same time. And give Folding@Home more to work with.

There's your problem. This is a Tinker core, and Tinkers run really awfully on G3's and G4's. Someone suggested a program called InCrease that can help boost performance on these. I believe they linked to it earlier in this thread.

Are you going to start a new thread Monday? That will probably get more attention from other Freepers.

Anyone know what happened to LSimpson?

He dropped 13 CPUs from the team this week.

Ok. I'm not really panicking, I just want to keep the DUmmies' morale up if any of them are lurking. ;-D

Can "points" be xferred in to Folding score from other similar programs (SETI, United Devices "Human Proteome")??

No.

Folding@Home is a standalone project.

Yep, it's that Tinker unit that you have running. They are not optimized, so they fold very, very slowly on G4s. Unfortunately, that seems to be all that my G4 gets to process. I'm the one who mentioned InCrease earlier. It is supposed to have settings to help G4s avoid being assigned Tinker units, but it hasn't helped mine do that.

Can you add the current link to the Folding@Home page? I currently have that as my browser start page, but then I have to come to FR and hunt for the current thread.

It would be great to have a link to click off the stanford page. Maybe right below President Reagan's picture.

If you're on the folding ping list, you'll get pinged every time we start a new thread (usually once a week).

have to come to FR and hunt for the current thread.

Most of us bump the thread, or post nonsense/smack/geektalk in my case, every so often. Then by clicking on the ping button (upper right)you can find the thread easily.
