Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.

While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.

The last two weeks has been rough, and my points/day have diminished, due to electrical upgrades, and I had to cut cpu utilization back to 70% to avoid conflicts with Novell Patchlink (similar to Windows Update service), and I had a few issues with the Stanford Servers getting blacklisted by the Intrusion Detection System. Hopefully, by tommorrow, or Sunday, my PPD will improve.

However, the team has done well, and kept up, to where my diminishing contributions, weren't even missed. I see there are a couple of new folders, that have the #2 team spot in their sights, especially the quiet one, Irenh, who is now up to 38 cpus.... another borg-master climbs aboard :)

Awesome. We should be well over a 1000 cpu's by the end of the month, over two million points, shooting for our third, and then a slow steady climb up to the #3 spot in the charts, right behind team Default, and team Google...

Alas, however, the thrill is gone, and I now only check the stats, 7 times a day, at 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, and 12am, instead of every hour on the hour. *heavy sigh*

I noticed that our production has been down in the last couple of days (that is, not trending upward inexorably), so hopefully it will go up again once your computer problems are rectified.

I joined up this weekend. I had one corruption at around 60% and lot the build! I also had a few other setbacks - my fault for messing around, but now my 3 little cpus are churning.

I might stop the one on my laptop because it seems to be running hot. I am already hooked, so I will likely turn it on intermittently. Also, I have plans to setup a PC for my son. At first, I was going to make it a modest system, but now.....

It's really funny that no one has any idea who Irenh is.

There is really is nothing wrong with socket 754. They actually perform just as well as 939 -- the 1 or 2 percent gain from "dual channel" memory is already factored into the CPU's speed ratings.

The only consideration is that 754 upgrades will be more limited, since dual core CPUs are only offered in 939 (and a new socket coming out in a few months).

If the price difference is major and you just want single core CPU anyway, then I'd do 754. Plus they have some low power consumption CPUs for 754 only (turion), would be nice to save a little power and cut down on noise.

I wonder if the Stanford people have ever considered giving out some really short quick ones for new people. I had a couple of reasonably large ones and was getting frustrated. I notice that you have done 4, but your point total is below mine. I guess there is no rhyme or reason.

There is really is nothing wrong with socket 754

Yeah, I think 754 is a good bang for the buck right now, considering it's "old technology". I invested in "dual channel" memory, and never saw a noticeable improvement in performance. I like 754 because I can use a 400w PS (I have 2 extras here), instead of needing a 500w'er. I guess my thoughts are to save a few bucks on this system, and get a monitor I can nail to my wall. LOL

I'll be changing my folding name as my wu's complete to honor my best friend, who I just had to put down due to CANCER.

I know to some this may seem silly, but I'm am truely heartbroken and depressed.

The loss of a pet is real grief and causes us to travel through the stages of grief - denial, anger, depression, guilt, and acceptance. These stages must be lived through for the mourning process to allow full healing.
