Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.
While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

I just bought a P4-3000HT, 200 GB SATA, dual layer DVDRW etc for 299.98, from the CompUSA business site. Deals like that come and go all the time, but this is better than most.
I have to turn it over to a friend who needs one, but only after I understand F@H on a dual core P4HT. I run mostly AMDs and need to learn the ways of Pentium.
And since the console version only reports the CPU usage as 50%, I will just leave it borged for the new owners.

I wonder how many of those "inactive" folders are just real slow machines?
Some machines are taking 2 weeks to fold one wu.

I wonder how many of those "inactive" folders are just real slow machines? You could be right. If you look at the chart for active folders you'll see a spike on 2/15, another on 2/5, and another on 1/26, which is every ten days. So maybe we have a bunch of machines that happen to be completing 10-day WUs at the same time? I have some machines that are doing the same thing--they just spiked a couple of days ago.
To: TheMightyQuinn
Every 10 days--that would be my processors, to name a couple. That comes to about 500 pts. Tinker core units take forever.

I'm doing a tinker core unit right now. 7.5 minutes per frame! I was getting 3.5 minutes per frame on the other two I completed last week!

Well, to say "I'm jeaous" would be an understatement. Were they 400-frame units?

No, 500. They were some sort of collagen molecule. I just checked the display, I'm getting 7mins 40 secs per frame.
I have a 6 month old Dell XPS 400. Not really a blazing speed demon, but it's a decent computer.

Sorry, my home computer, connected by a single phone line through the trees, is not going to be of any use to you all.
Good Folding though!

Hey, I'm thinking of upgrading my motherboard/chip. I don't play games on my computers, so I never really considered any type of high-power hardware.
However, with this folding taking so long on my machine, I'm thinking I should get something with a little more zots.
I was thinking of a AMD Althon X2 3800+ 2.0 Ghz combined with a Asus motherboard. I'm not going to overclock - just don't have time of an extra hobby. But, any recommendations on bang-for-the-buck cpu/mobo upgrades?
Anybody know what F@H compares best to with classic benchmarks; CPU Whetstone, CPU Drystone, Sandra-integer or floating? As found on www.tomshardware.com.
Thanks,
